    In the TEXAS house that's called say bye bye to the doggy kiddos. My threshold for animal medical bills is about $500. Any more and they get sent to the rainbow bridge.

    Our two goofball dogs split a giant (about 6"x6") dark chocolate brownie the other day before I realized what happened. The big one grabbed it off a plate in the middle of the kitchen island.I gave my kids a warning that we would give it the night and see how they did, but if one or both started convulsing or (whatever happens when a dog eats chocolate) say your goodbyes cause I'm not saving them. Both of the weirdos are still alive with no I'll effects.

    Up here two stitches went 900 this summer on my Britt......my regular vet doesn't charge me every visit though, we work it out  with a few small jobs here and there

    I also have a good relationship with vets whom I trust.  They will give me the varuous options and outcomes and then let me make the decision.  Large animal vets tend to be more pragmatic than your city vet who upsells like a used car dealer.

    I was going to ask if there is a threshold for the kids medical expenses, but thought better of posting that.

    or if it’s too late to return the pets to Costco, also not suitable to post.

    we paid a fair bit to keep a lab with lymphoma alive because we were moving from San Diego to Texas, the kids were young and it was the most consistency we could provide them. I won’t break the bank on a pet if it’s hopeless and keeping them alive doesn’t benefit the pet, but they’re part of the family, like it or not.  Kids learn by example.

    My pets are part of my family too, but it's a pet, not my kid. I'm not going to deplete an emergency fund or put $5k on a credit card for a dog that I paid $100 for at the animal shelter. Especially if that dog may at best live a few more years. Everything has a cost benefit analysis for me and my kids will learn that too. I have compassion for animals but I'm not going to go broke for it. Feel free to spend your money how you want.

He slams someone for sharing what their limit might be (which he apparently thought was way too low) and I was curious where his limit might stop 5K, 10K 100K? Genuinely curious. His response was quite the politician non-answer. Of course, he is under no obligation to give me an answer and is quite free to tell me it's NOMFB.

    I believe everyone has a pet-vet limit, most people just don't divulge it.  It probably varies based upon a number of factors during the pet's life and the owner's life.

    I also believe it is important to know the current limit before taking Rascal to the Vet.  Because, it sucks to set the limit when that decision needs to be made and the kiddo's are sobbing over Rascal.

    Pre kids…..$21,000 over a 3 year span on a Weimaraner…….and that’s without the monthly pharmacy run for his congestive heart failure meds. Do I win?( Except maybe for Ozzie with horses)

    I recently paid a bit more than $800 to have a lump removed from the Boxer’s leg. But if it had been cancer positive I wouldn’t have had chemo or ongoing treatment. Been there with the last one. She had phenobarbital to control seizures and a special low fat low taste dog food for thyroid issues. She just knew that she was drunk, expected to eat crap, and still had massive seizures. The poor vet looked like she was 16 and likely it was her first euthanasia. I was there the whole time with my dog’s head in my lap.

    I was not referring to the dollar amount, more so the flippant response about the chocolate bar situation.  Basically, I am gonna teach my kids a lesson by letting my dog die from a preventable and treatable situation.  Same with teeth removal.  It is treatable and will save the dog immense pain.

    My initial statement could have been more clear. 
    I do not begrudge anyone who would spend $500 on an animal, that is not a trivial sum, and probably better than a significant portion of animal owners could afford to drop.  It was the "tough ****, hope they don't die, but kids gunna learn a lesson attitude."

    I have been fortunate enough to be able to provide my animals the care I felt they warranted.  I have six figures tied up in animals so my situation is definitely not the norm on this forum.  I have insurance on my performance horses.  Just my insurance premium on my horses is about $1200/horse a year.  That is only for mortality and colic surgery.  It varies based on horse value and competition event. I have to provide heath histories and vet reports.  My animals are my single largest expense.  I often wonder why I do it.

    Edit: my personal limit for cats is about tree fiddy.

    Do you (any of you) have an insurance plan for dogs?    We always had one for ours and the financial pain was minimal—albeit there were never any substantial issues with our hounds.

    We had a plan probably about 15 years ago.  At the time it was relatively new and was very confusing to use.  We did it for a year, but had such a negative experience, we never did it again.
