"Biden has explicitly called Russian President Vladimir Putin a “war criminal” in a seemingly off the cuff comment yesterday. The assertion, which was made in response to a reporter’s questions at an event on an entirely different topic, came after Zelensky’s forceful speech to Congress earlier that day. Neither the International Criminal Court nor the U.S. government has formally concluded that Russia’s actions constitute war crimes, making Biden’s “seemingly spontaneous assertion …all the more striking,” Ashley Parker reports for the Washington Post.
The Kremlin has responded to Biden’s assertion that Putin is a war criminal, calling it “unforgivable rhetoric.” “We believe such rhetoric to be unacceptable and unforgivable on the part of the head of a state, whose bombs have killed hundreds of thousands of people around the world,” spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told Russian state news agency Tass. Putin gassed the Syrian people, either directly or through Assad's proxy. If that ain't a war crime...then I can't imagine what is. Putin is talking about a "cleansing" of his own people, those that sympathize with "The West". You know, it's a tricky minefield picking a few bits of sense out of the firehose of stupidity we see posted online and occasionally here. I don't know how those people go from valid issue to full blown screaming nonsense. That said, there are some random things to pick out of the flow that should be mentioned.
There are neo-nazi's in Ukraine we have supplied with weapons, indirectly. They really seem to hate Russians instead of Jews, since there is too much Mongol blood in them, in their opinion. Not much we need to do about them, though, and it doesn't justify Russia invading Ukraine.
Ask the Afghan people if it's possible the US might use another country to damage the power of Russia, with no real concern for the locals. Since we seem (rightly, I'd say) to have no interest in getting into a war with Russia, the push to threaten NATO on their doorstep beforehand and a constant flow of weapons and cheerleading afterwards could be read as guaranteeing a flattened country between us and them. Russia will certainly come out weaker after this, with or without Putin.
Our government has damaged the idea of International Law, with a constant disregard of it when it restricts us, so it's hard to take their condemnations of other governments as anything but disingenuous. Replacing "Law" with "Rules Based Order" means you don't want anyone referencing Law.
"Whataboutism" can be a valid response. Not in the Hilary and Hunter sense, but in the "What about what we did in Iraq?" sense. To dismiss that question as just whataboutism or worthless means you have no response to a valid point. To put it bluntly, W certainly can and should have been charged with war crimes. If we were a party to the International Court, he would have been.
There seems to be a sliding scale of believability in the world, with regular people at one end (the good one) and governments on the other. Somewhere in the middle are news organizations who are supposed to be informing us, but often fail. When they just act as stenographers of government, we are being disserved.
