In reality a major contributor to the demise of the Soviet Union (besides bankrupting them (before we got to that point)) was their tacit acknowledgement that our attack submarines (aka SSN's) were able to hold their second strike ballistic missile submarines (SSBN's) at risk 24/7.

Is the US now going to move to a more aggressive policy of organising compatible heavier weaponry and aircraft to be transferred from Eastern Europe to Ukraine?  I'm not sure what the political mood is, we see little on the news at the moment.  The pictures from this weekend should mean no limits on what we deliver to Ukraine and no limits to sanctions on Russia.

    Some paragraphs from today. Russia-Ukraine:

"The bodies of 410 civilians have been found in Kyiv-area towns that were recently retaken from Russian forces, Ukraine’s prosecutor-general, Iryna Venediktova has said. In Bucha, a suburb northwest of the capital, Associated Press journalists saw 21 bodies. At least two had their hands tied behind their backs. Oleksandr Stashevskyi and Nebi Qena report for AP.

280 people have been buried in mass graves in Bucha, while the bodies of whole families still lie in shot up cars, Bucha mayor, Anatoly Fedoruk, told Agence France Presse on SaturdayFrance 24 reports.

A satellite company says its images document a mass grave in the Ukrainian town of Bucha. A satellite photo from Thursday appears to show a large grave, according to Maxar Technologies — a 45-foot-long trench near the Church of St. Andrew and Pyervozvannoho All Saints. Maxar said its images also show “the first signs of excavation” on March 10. Hannah Knowles reports for the Washington Post. "

Edit:  Russian response to the above:

"Russia’s foreign ministry has said that footage of dead civilians in Bucha had been ordered by the U.S. as part of a plot to blame Russia. "Who are the masters of provocation? Of course, the United States and NATO," ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in an interview on state television late yesterday. Reuters reports. "

I don't think the situation has changed in re our desire not to spark WWIII. When all the shooting is over, and the investigations can be done by outside agencies, maybe something will come of it. The Int'l organizations have very little power to actually do anything though. There isn't anyone who can call Russia to account, just like there isn't anyone who can call us to account. Bill Kristol may think we 'pay our dues', but we have only ever punished low level flunkies who were ordered to do what they did. And the punishments were usually dropped later.

Nothing will happen to anyone of significance. Time to call Putin's bluff.

He's more and more like Alex Jones on Sandy Hook, but then again, more and more people will believe conspiracy theories.  There are people that think the covid pandemic is a hoax, even with family dying from it.

I was explaining to my son today that this is how WWII started.  The world waited to stop Germany then too.  The world promised never again.  And yet, here we are.

Hate to come to Carlson's defense, but he never actually said this. Seems like something he would, but Walsh was just posing a "What would Carlson say" kind of thing.

Seems a bit over the top, don't you think? The rest of the world isn't in danger of Russia invading them; they can't seem to get past Ukraine. Do you ever point out all the other invasions and wars around the world, and terrify your child with them? No one is 'appeasing' Putin, but if you'd like a war between two nuclear superpowers, your son won't need to worry about much afterwards. You should be glad you live in a country that can invade and attack anyone they want and no one will say boo to us.

Yes, that was my understanding as well after looking into it some more.  Thanks for the comment.  No need to make Carlson seem worse than he is on the subject, as he seems to be providing plenty of material on his own.

Do post further then on his intentions. "this is how WWII started.  The world waited to stop Germany then too.  The world promised never again." Did we promise to stop all dictators early, save the Jews in time next time, or just stop all wars in Europe? Which "again" are we again-ing?

I just think asking someone if they ever terrify their kids unnecessarily, and telling them they should be happy to live in a country that can invade anyone at whim is a little over the top in the way of a response.  As to the rest, like I wrote above, he can speak for himself.

We'll, I definitely came on strong in the parenting advice. Depending on his age, what is he supposed to do with that information? Wet his bed? I grew up during Vietnam and never knew about it.

As for the second part, we should all be happy to live here in obliviousness, where no other country dares suggest sanctions on us, or war crime trials for our leaders.

This seems like a fairly peculiar/bizarre angle to take on this issue, especially right now, but you do you I guess.

Last post on this. Thank you for giving me permission to write an opinion beyond all those from A-B! Way to shatter the Overton Window.
Ozzie just said something that is being spoken everywhere, but is a dangerous idea that will lead us to war. Our leaders and news organizations talk about the outrageous behavior of our enemies, and insist we defend freedom and decency. They act as though our hands are clean, and any similar behavior's were unintentional and in our past. Anyone who can read at a grade level above "Twitter" can find the bloody foreign policies of our country, and the people we call allies. Things that are happening right now, and past behavior we've never acknowledged. Who wouldn't be happy to live in a country like this?

The latest I have on Russia-Ukraine war:

"Why the intense interest in Donbas? Consider this rail map of Ukraine; it hints at the industrial output stretching out of Donbas. There's also this bit of history from the Crisis Group
    • "Under the Soviet Union, Donbas was an industrial powerhouse, producing disproportionate shares of the Union's coal and steel. Its population consisted largely of first- and second-generation migrants sent from other Soviet republics to staff its mines and factories. The region thus earned a reputation as one of the most 'Sovietised' parts of the Union—a place where pre-existing identities, languages and patterns of life had been supplanted by a multicultural society held together by common pride in industry, with Russian as the lingua franca."

On the diplomatic front, Moscow is newly upset by Ukraine's desire to negotiate over Crimea and the eastern Donbas, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in a statement Thursday. During the last round of talks in Turkey, "the Ukrainian delegation proposed a 15-year negotiating process for Crimea, the peninsula that Russia seized in 2014," the New York Timesreports. And this week, Belarus's own autocratic leader insisted future peace talks must include someone from his government, declaring, "There can be no separate deals behind Belarus's back.""
