Anyone remeber the Steven Segal movie.  Action flick based on an oil rig.  At the end they had some drivel about 100mpg carburator and engines that ran on water.  Said big oil was why we didn't have that technology.  Some serious PSA at the end.

Lost a lot of respect for Steven that day.

*Edit - here is the clip from "On Deadly Ground"

How much respect did you have for Comrade Segal to lose?  Did you lose all of it, or just some of it?  Most?

I lost like 50% of my respect, so equivalent to a whole Jean Claude Van Dam.

Bruce Willis and Vin Diesel are an entirely different category.

I thing Steven Segal currently bookends the "Best 80s Action Star List", and it is not on the good side of the list.

Bloodsport is still the best action movie documentary ever made.  Fact.

i didn't read the middle two pages, did she get the tesla? i know a few people with the S who say it's the best car they've ever owned.

last time i was due for a car, i talked the audi dealer into letting me try their electric SUV.  the experience of driving an electric car is damned cool.  but the price was absurd.

the economics must be improving if all these other brands are coming out with competitively priced electrics, right?
They’re just better products.  Maintenance on an EV long term is a fraction of what you pay with a gas powered vehicle.
Probably though the tire wear is higher. Generally true though.
I did not know that.  Elaborate, pls

Heavier vehicles than the same size and style of gas burners. Plus generally higher take off torque than the general run of gas burners. Add to that narrow “eco” tires for most that result in a higher psi load on the tires.

I found this on Consumer Reports: "Jill Trotta, vice president of marketing and sales at RepairPal, says that by the time a vehicle reaches its fifth year—which is often when expensive items like tires wear out—EVs cost about $900 a year to repair and maintain, whereas comparable gasoline-powered cars cost about $1,200."

I never said that the overall maintenance/operational cost was higher. Just that the tire cost was likely higher.
Once you get used to EV driving technique, you find out that you can stretch the range by being smooth, carrying speed / avoiding unnecessary speed up / slow down and simply slowing down. I am a lot less aggressive on tyres in the EV than in a petrol car.
EVs are also able to effect better traction control.  Better traction control means less slip which means less wear.  I am not convinced tires actually wear out more quickly in a run-of-the-mill EV, but would be happy to look at real data that indicates otherwise.
You win range by decelerating gently as well, so braking loads are minimised.

It was my first thought that squeezing efficiency out of tires was probably one of the easiest ways to extend mileage.  Rolling resistance doesn't get you from point A to point B.  It might get you more traction, but most EVs aren't Tesla Roadsters.

How to do that?  Probably more silicone in the compound, higher tire pressures, smaller contact patch, lower heat, etc.   I can see those tires costing more for the size and what they are, but it was counter-intuitive to think they cost more over the life of the car.

Good thing is there's plenty of road miles on EVs out there to mine the data (and train the machine learning AI).  But I'm too lazy to dig it up.
I would not be able to keep my foot off the throttle in a Tesla.  I don't think the acceleration would ever get old.
The acceleration is a bit of a 1 dimensional trick and you spend more time looking out for how to extend range than for acceleration opportunities.

So the conclusion is not necessarily.  Maybe for some performance models where drivers have a tendency to drive aggressively, but not with some more run-of-the-mill EVs.  I don’t know that the average model S owner is all that concerned about needing to purchase tires frequently, but maybe some of the folks here who own one will chime in.

I think the bottom line still holds: they are overall simply better products, and that’s a big reason why auto manufacturers are transitioning to them.

And I will state again that I was one of the people who transitioned to an electric vehicle. My only car is a VW ID4 and my only lawnmower is an Ego electric vehicle. I don’t wear blinders though. Nothing is perfect and everything has trade offs.

Of course.  Nobody ever indicated otherwise.

Very cool - so you got one of the early ID4s?  How do you like it?

A problem with the Car Connect app but otherwise I like it fine. My state desperately needs CCS fast chargers north of the coast all the way to Tennessee but maybe that will be in the infrastructure package that passes.

Was that the movie that Nicole Eggert jumped out of the cake and danced at the beginning? If so, that was my favorite.

Good work. Correct on all accounts.

I'm shopping for tires right now.
Sample size of 1: 2018 Tesla Model 3. 39,631 miles in 2 years, 5 months
edit to add: Dual Motor Long Range AWD.
OEM tires were 235/45R-18 MICHELIN PRIMACY MXM4

All four are in pretty bad shape. I probably should have replaced them about 1500 miles back. They've been rotated twice.

I'll most likely order from tire rack and have a local shop mount and balance. Looks like I'm going to pay between $175 to $250 per tire depending on what I go with.

Just out of curiosity....do you drive that with a lead foot or do you try to maximize your efficiency?

More of a lead foot unless on a long trip.
I definitely don't try to maximize efficiency day to day.
