I told him he would need to pay the power bill he's generating. He did the math and still thinks he'll be making money. We'll see...

    I read something a few weeks ago that claimed global Bitcoin mining uses more electricity than is used by the entire nation of Denmark.

    Shut the HVAC vents to his bedroom and let him heat the room with his mining rig - might be a breakeven proposition.

    The largest Bitcoin mining operation/data center in North America is opening in my city in the next week or so. They're spending $60 million and installing tens of thousands of mining rigs.

    An individual can lease one for just $4800/year. Sounds like a good deal. I might get one so that in a year or so I'll have made so much I can afford go hang with Mallman in Patagonia for a few days.

    Bitcoin and mining makes no sense to me.  Imagine if all this computing power was put into medical simulation, nuclear weapon simulation, or climate simulations.  Instead they find a unique code worth an artificial monetary amount.  I do not get it.

    Nvida stock has been nuts this last year from this too.  Good on him maybe have him read some white papers github on some other coins and projects there is a future in block chain IMHO.  Heck maybe one day his crypto will retire you and him.

    Submitting another research proposal.  This one is a collaboration with some folks at the University of Texas.  It's to a DOE program on modeling and simulation of various phenomena between nuclear fuel rods and cladding.  I think we have a reasonable shot at it.  Asking for $800k over three years.

    BTW-  you just need to move on the 7 and 8 figures to the left of the decimal point proposals... ;)

    Most of my expertise is around fracture and failure, which does occur during PCMI (pellet-cladding mechanical interaction), but our focus is actually on trying to better understand the coupled thermo-Mechanical contact that can occur during power ramp.  It’s difficult to simulate for a variety of reasons and there aren’t many experiments that have been conducted under laboratory settings that would facilitate model calibration.

    Just make sure you let your kids do their own science fair projects.  I have a neighbor that’s a PhD EE and his kid turned in a project in elementary school that won the ribbons despite having Dad’s fingerprints all over it.  Pretty funny to see other parents react and how that trickles down to their kids.

    Preping these for a much needed mental health day tomorrow of smoking ribs. 
    5.5 lbs of beef plate ribs.  I figure I'll start first thing in the morning.  I'm also going to throw on a rack of BB's for a neighbor recovering from foot surgery.  I am looking forward to it. 
    @tarheelmatt  one of these days your going to have to visit Conrad-Hinkle.

    @Ozzie_Isaac - I absolutely will.  She definitely is her own spirit and has always challenged herself.  I would almost say "no fear" but that would not be fair. She is aggressive in the air but knows the edge of the envelope although not afraid to get up close and personal.  A throw-back would fit for sure.  Ah, youthful exuberance.

    @nolaegghead - Way to repurpose the goat rig (til this Fall) but the plumbing issues are definitely no fun.  With your skills this one should be a "no brainer".  But f-ing with water always means more teflon tape than planned.  Best of luck.

    It's a darn shame to see such talent wasted by joining the Navy!  If she wants to truly grow a pair and join Americas first and greatest fighting force, have her give me a ring.  I know some people and can get her hooked up!

    If not, then I wish her the best.  Sounds like she is in for quite a ride.
