  • Congrats on purchase and welcome to the forum. I bought mine about 6 months ago. Added an XL in two months. I use center cut charbroil charcoal from Loews (lots of threads on it) as it lights faster and does not give much smokey flavor. Use all natural fire starters with culinary torch to light it. It took me about 3 months to get to "know" to regulate temp without temp control regulators. (have flameboss 200 which I haven't used much)

Welcome  Wayne. There's a bunch of threads already for the minimax. Do some digging (google question and egghead forum) and ask what ever specific questions you need to. We'll be glad to answer.

The MM is a searing machine and works great with a 14" cast iron pizza pan for smash burgers or just searing on iron. When your fire ring cracks just keep on cooking. =)

Congrats on the new MM! I purchased one about 2 weeks ago to go with my Large egg. I have only made burgers on it so far....been out of town all week working, but that will soon change. Enjoy and Grill On!
  • Congrats on the MM! I bought one to compliment the large. I recently bought the woo and wok from CGS. I can't wait to try some stir fries.

    Love my minimax.

It heats up fast...and at lo temps burns fuel very slooooowly.  Get a SMOBOT ordered on kickstarter tonight. It will advance your long term cooking abilities a thousand fold.

Get a cgs stone, woo and get the bge platesetter plus a pizza stone.  The bge platesetter fits in the woo and youll be happy to have both, get the cgs wok and the 5 Qt double dutch oven for your minimax as well.

Pizza is awesome on mm and you can never go wrong with a cast iron dd lid pan sear of a t bone, filet or new york.   Incredible

Contact rrp and get the proper gasket for your mm.  Rutland.

I cook on my minimax more and more all the time.

I have owned a MM for a couple of years now, and I have thoroughly enjoyed mine. The previous posters have given great advice, but I think you also asked how to light it. There are several ways to do so; chimney, Mapp, weed burner, starter cubes, cotton balls soaked in alcohol, paper towels soaked in cooking oil, etc.
It is difficult for me to select the best thing to cook on the MM, because it is all so good.
I am a meat and potato guy. I like doing tenderloin roasts on mine. Easy to do, great results every time.

    Welcome to the MM cult.
It's no different IMO than any other BGE as far as temp control. First egg for you?  If not don't sweat it.  Fuel, Fire & control of Airflow. What's best on the MM :confounded: EVERYTHING that's put inside.

If you want it to get hot quick, after your starter cube / paper towel / torch / napalm / whatever you use to start it dies down a little leave the lid propped open about 1/2 an inch. Leave that bottom vent wide open and leave the DFMT off. It will get hot quick. I have one of the "reluctant to get hot quick" versions. YRMV.

Alright this morning I started the fire with a half of square lighter. It started off a lot slower than the first time I did it. I was able to control temp better. I am cooking boneless thighs at about 400 degrees with the heat sheild in and they turned out great. Longer than normal but still moist and tender. Awesome thanks for all your suggestions!!!!! I love this forum...lol

The floppy vent on the bottom needs a little tweak probably too...not sure what post it was but it was a while back. Made a difference for me.

The only problem I have with my high Q is that small lump falls through and my lump is always small since I use it from my used large egg.

Not much room down below until it starts blocking airflow.

Im relatively new to using my MIni though. Not a MM

Don't want to hijack your thread, but maybe @Wayne357 or another MMX owner can answer my Question. Has anyone else noticed that their fire ring is a smaller diameter than their fire box? Mine is 1/8-1/4" smaller all the way around. Not sure if the picture will show it but I will try...

    I love, love my Mini_MAX!!!
I have only had it for alittle over a year now, and I can not say enough good things about it. And it is my only Big Green Egg, I am still a new kid around here, and do not half of what the posters above me do.

But I can say it did have a bit of a learning curve at first.

    You first question.
How to light it?  You like it like any other Big Green Egg.
But if this is your first Big Green Egg.
Fill it almost full about 3 - 5 inches from top of where the great goes with natural lump charcoal ( I like Royal Oak, it comes in a red bag.)
    The I use
    http://biggreenegg.com/product/electric-charcoal-starter/
I leave it in with lid open, and bottom vent open all the way for about 5 - 7 minutes. I use this when I want to fast, or get hotter.
If I want to get hot alittle slower.
I will put 2 of these in there, equal distances apart
    http://http//biggreenegg.com/product/speedilight-charcoal-starters/
I leave it in with lid open, and bottom vent open all the way for about 7 - 10 minutes. But U use them when I am going for a lower, slower cook.

As for temperature control, it is them same as any other Egg.
It is all about air flow, and the bottom vent, and black daisy wheel, and how open you make both of these.

If your Egg, did not come with a plate setter.
    http://http//biggreenegg.com/product/conveggtor/
Go out and get one RIGHT NOW!!!.

As far as my favorite thing to cook, right now it is either quesadillas.
Or using the plate setter, and wrapping shrimp in bacon, and stuffing them with random things in them, and putting them on the Egg.

Ok smoking a pork butt since 8am. Running anywhere from 275-300. As you can see where I have my egg set for this temp and I am 1 degree off of wrapping it to 200 degrees. I have not opened it all day and I want to open so bad. I will show you the outcome.
    thanks

And after 11 hours we reached an internal temp of 202. I pulled it off but couldn't wait to start picking at it lol. That little mini max worked all day and held steadfast at 275-300 degrees and could continue for another 4-5 hours it looks like. This thing is a beast.....WOW I'm impressed!!
  • Looks good. Way to not peek. What size was the butt?
