Brother Brent, may I play off one of your points?  You said "freedom of speech is kinda special."  Freedom of speech is a God given right and is recognized as such by the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.  What that means is nobody will throw you in jail for your speech.  It does not guarantee your speech will be without consequences.  People get fired for saying stupid things everyday.  In this case, people do not have a right of access to speak on the forum should the owners of the forum decide they have crossed the line.
That's the one thing I can't stand about this forum.

@Dyal_SC, I have to agree.  However fun and games are also ok.  The vulgarity and pornosity (not a real word) have nothing to do with BBQ. That said, freedom of speech is kinda special.  There will be times we're made uncomfortable.  We post on and view this forum to learn about and post about all things BBQ and charcuterie.  However, other prescient topics will arise, if nothing else than for distraction.  Guns, politics, the speed of light.  I'm with you in that BBQ should be the focus.  But fun should be there too.  You've seen my threads regarding concealed carry weapons and gun safe zones.  They are "Off Topic" threads that belong here.  The vulgar stuff, uh, sometimes it's funny but I get your point, I could do without it.  But the whole forum, is awesome.  And as much as @nolaegghead and I disagree on politics, we have great fun chatting about our Porsches,  Can you tell I'm babysitting a brisket?

Spot on Fred.   If someone wants to start their own forum, they can set their own limits or have none if they so choose.  Most business sponsored forums will have limits on language, attacks,  even topics.   It's their hosting dollars and their reputation.  I think they allow quite a wide latitude here and we should all think before posting questionable stuph in order to keep it that way.  If some of the incendiary gang wants to open a no holes barred forum, I might even pay to enjoy the sparring. Here though, we must respect the public nature of BGE's corporate reputation and act semi-restrained. IMHO  @Spaightlabs I didn't see ur post when I wrote mine,  I obviously agree.

Yeah, it isn't every thread, but if you have a 12 year old kid interested in egging who comes on here that kid isn't gonna not read the questionable stuff.

you can walk on the razor's edge, but you can't complain if you get cut.

I think Nola would be the first to admit that he tends to discourage young men from coming on this forum just to learn how to smoke their meat.

While all of that is certainly true, @stlcharcoal , what are the rules, exactly?  Certainly the rules of common decency apply, and are generally adhered to, but if there is an explicit set of guidelines for this forum (along with the associated penalties for violations), I missed them.

I agree that BGE can moderate this forum however they want - it's their space.  However, moderation here is inconsistent at best, both at what is allowed, and when (and to what degree).  A clearer policy and consistent (and transparent) moderation would go a long way from preventing these sort of outcrys.

And frankly, without a little latitude to stray off topic from time to time, this forum would get boring and empty pretty fast.  You can only post so many spatchcock chickens.

nola's just been spotted at Target with skinny jeans hanging below his butt and his underwear showing.  Oh, and he's sporting a purple mohawk.  There was a trail of crying 10 year old kids with their mothers trying to comfort them.

What's there is not actually all that helpful in terms of what Buzd's asking.

I think it's pretty clear what the "rules" are, however, just from observing what happens on this forum on a regular basis.  This is pretty boring stuff if you ask me, but whatever.

Threads that are product spam or political in nature will eventually get sunk, or "buffaloed" as SGH likes to put it.

Threads that are clearly offensive in some way shape or form will simply be deleted.

Forum members who start offensive threads will have their accounts suspended.  Depending on the member, that suspension might be permanent or it might be temporary.

I think that's basically it.  Yeah things aren't always consistent but come on.  This forum actually functions extremely well for what it's designed to do: build a community of people around BGE products, be a safe space (you see what I did there) to ask questions, and to allow people to share recipes and info about Eggfests and the like.

I did not see the thread in question.  I am also not a frequent poster so my opinion does not matter much.  Recently I have been getting turned off by this place with the various threads re politics, guns and so on.  I realize that no one is forcing me to read any of these threads, and I usually avoid them.  But the net overall impact, is that the way that people carry on in those threads turns me off on the entire forum.  So I now come around once in a while rather than every day.

Forums like this are not founded on the principles of free speech, and we are all here by the good graces of the host.  If you are a visitor in someone's home, then you live by their rules when you are there.  A similar principle applies here and in any other hosted forum.  Seems like some people have a hard time with that concept.

Plus you had to agree to them when you signed up.

I don't think they need to spell it out that you can not post a thread entitled "#%&$ you".  Nor can you go to the public park and start yelling that with people around you.  C'mon.....common sense.  And "I was drunk" may be a reason, but it's not an excuse.

This is private property and we're guests.  BGE can run it how they see fit because free speech does not apply here.  If it's boring, we can all go somewhere else--that's our freedom.

I wasn't disagreeing with you on any of those points, and certainly not as to whether the thread in question was appropriate.

My only point is that the moderation is inconsistent - some obviously inappropriate threads stay up for a while, some just sink, some are zapped immediately. Perhaps it wouldn't seem as arbitrary with visible moderators or BGE participation for more immediate feedback.

But ultimately, I agree - their turf and they can run it the way they want.

I am truly amazed at some of these responses. JIC,  I seldom agree with your political/social commentary ( I'm about as conservative as you get.). This is a bunch of s@it. I was gifted a MBGE, and largely because of my time on this forum, I'm looking to buy an XLG. And by the  way stlcharcoal , I use ur effing charcoal and travel an hour each way to get it.  I learned about it here.  Personally, I enjoy the back and forth banter. If someone is concerned about what their d@mn kid might read on here, they sure as he// better be leaning over their shoulder every time they are on the web.  This sh:t is relatively pretty tame.  My $.02 worth.

Probably because they only step in when alerted......due to a flag or email to "forumabuse".  If they have pay someone to police this place full time, you will pretty much see it go away.  If the place runs just fine and no one is flagging/emailing, then there's probably better stuff to be doing.

The marshall might only roll through town a few times a week or once a day and just zap stuff they immediately see.  With non-descriptive titles, or with the chaos that occurs in some threads spontaneously, there's no watching every single one of them 24/7.  Most of it the "fun" happens Friday and Saturday nights.
