    Set up 1-900-SAVE-NOLA or GoFundNola,
    • if he comes back, he can use the $ to buy a breathalyzer for the keyboard  =)
    • if not, he can use the fund to set up his own forum  ;)
Kidding aside, I vote for his return.

Nola is one of the friendliest, nicest, sharing, and good hearted guys ever. Please bring him back. I'm not very important but @nolaegghead has taught me lots about BBQ and stuff. But he is wrong about politics and religion. When it comes to topics of extreme importance he is wrong. But on matters of meat and smoke he knows his stuff.

Forums like this are places where people of different stripes can find common ground. We might not agree on politics or religion, but we can help each other with a mundane difficult problem, such as making good brisket, and through that realize that we share the same humanity.

What is important is the quality of the information shared, weighed against the manner in which the members use the forum. Those who are searching for information on using the BGE are going to skip over a topic titled, "F*ck you."  The punishment should be deletion of the topic.

There is a great long read available on this very subject, one that I encourage anyone interested in social media to take the time to read. 12 years after he wrote it, Clay Shirky's A Group Is It's Own Worst Enemy is still incredibly insightful. For example,

The people using your software, even if you own it and pay for it, have rights and will behave as if they have rights. And if you abrogate those rights, you'll hear about it very quickly.

That's part of the problem that the John Hegel theory of community -- community leads to content, which leads to commerce -- never worked. Because lo and behold, no matter who came onto the Clairol chat boards, they sometimes wanted to talk about things that weren't Clairol products.

"But we paid for this! This is the Clairol site!" Doesn't matter. The users are there for one another. They may be there on hardware and software paid for by you, but the users are there for one another.

The irony of this all? The "Best Of' page is peppered with posts from this thread! Fewer this morning, but there were more on that page last night.

Those who mentioned the BBQ Brethren site - the moderators over there  make their presence known, to keep folks in line. I have lurked there for a couple of years, but I used to post more often before I got my eggs. The mods there will let a member know if they are out of line, and at least one warning shot is fired across the bows before someone is banned. The rules are clearly stated on their site, and from what i can tell, they don't have the yahoos and trolls that this forum often has. I'm talking about that guy Mike Hauchertz or whatever, ayayron, etc. The Brethren site is great for those reasons - I don't recall any flamewars, etc. that were not addressed in a fair manner. I believe their mods are unpaid volunteers.

As for this forum, I hang out here almost exclusively now because of the diversity of the membership, and discussions about EVERYTHING. Lately, the mods here seem to be paying more attention, judging by how many threads start sinking or get buffaloed. Yes, some semblance of decorum should be maintained, so a thread titled "f*ck you" deserves to be scrubbed.

And lets not forget that its only the internet, folks. You don't like someone's rants about whatever on a thread? No worries - they're not in your house and you don't have to give a rat's taint about them.

Why do i care? Because nola's a good dude. He's probably given more helpful advice than ranted here, and he always welcomes folks into his home if you happen to mention you're going to be in his 'hood (I'm speaking from personal experience). Of note, he owns a KJ Jr, and never really posted any KJ cooks here. How's that for sticking with the forum theme?

The mods need to be more consistent with the Heavy Hand. Either patrol the forum and whip everyone into shape/line according to a published set of rules, or leave it alone (like you used to). I'm not calling you names like that **** JIC, so please don't ban me. I'm not very creative, and I don't want to have to come up with another handle to come back here.

And @nolaegghead, if you're not back on already, download teamviewer on 2 (or more) computers/devices. Easy way to remote in to a computer, and will possibly get you around the IP block

Another problem that the moderation team faces is "win/lose". As long as the moderators stay faceless (I have no idea how this forum is policed), allowing nolaegghead back would be seen in that context: "We lose, you win." And no one loses intentionally.

It can't be that way. Nolaegghead screwed up. Nolaegghead has to face the music. If the moderation team decides to reverse their decision, they must also maintain control of that decision; it has to be what is best for BGE, for the forum, for the moderation team, and for nolaegghead.

Everything is ephemeral. Things do change No one user is bigger than the whole, but the whole does not exist without every one user. Nolaegghead's helpfulness can be replaced, by pretty much anyone. What you are asking for isn't the return of the advice and helpfulness, but the personality, the connectedness to this one user who makes the forum worth more to you than the advice. (I say "you" instead of "we" because honestly I haven't participated enough to make any connections, nor to develop a forum personality of my own. I don't know nolaegghead like many here do.) This community is very large, and also very tightly knit, making it remarkable, especially for a forum that uses this format.

I say bring the guy back and see what happens. If it doesn't work, bring back the banhammer and move forward.

Do not post links or images or create posts that are irrelevant for the purpose of the forum, which includes insulting, offensive, racist, sexist, discriminatory, obscene or vulgar remarks or any post which may be found to be in violation of any law or ordinance. This includes posts on topics which are polarizing or inflammatory in nature. If you do any of this, we will of course delete the post and ban you permanently.

....It does not matter what stature you think you hold in these forums, you are expected to maintain decorum and play nice. Doing otherwise will get your account suspended temporarily … or permanently if the situation is blatant or repetitive.

    Could go either way.

Thanks for posting that. The last line sums it up nicely.

If you have ever perused the BBQ Brethren site, first a moderator, then the site administrator will  post a very public warning if any tomfoolery is taking a turn for the ugly. As long as I've been on that site, they have always seemed pretty fair in how they have dealt with members. This forum's admins/mods may want to mosey on over there and see how it should be done.

And yes, I have a feeling he's on here too :)

The drunker he became (as he posted in the wee AM hours) , the legend in his own mind only grew stronger , IMHO, of course.

And if you disagreed with the progressive political know it all rants, he went straight to the Lib playbook a la Saul Alinski.

I had some beers with him on Saturday night.  We talked a little bit about brisket camp 2016.  It's going to be even bigger and badder. Maybe if BGE decides that he can't ever post here again, we could reach out to Kamado Joe to see if they would like some free advertising.

Since I posted the above, I have received several PM's and texts from members who have contacted BGE in support of brother Nola. Thank you all who have took the time to reach out on his behalf. Those of you who haven't, please do so. Every little bit helps. Thank you all again.

Just a tip. You can call BGE, click "Support" or click "Report Forum Abuse". By using the Report Forum Abuse option, your request goes straight to a moderator. Thanks again everyone. I really appreciate it, as does brother Nola.
