  • One of my good buddies was nominated in some Ace/BGE contest. Here’s a cool video on our group of eggheads. I’m not sure if you’ll need an active fb account to see it or not.

^^^ That takes me back to England in the 70's when I was a student there.

The public payphone's coin slot had a spring loaded lever that would bounce back after swallowing the coin, occasionally I would find one where the lever would not travel far enough to swallow the coin. An uninitiated bloke would walk away, thinking it was out-of-order. For me? Jackpot! I would wrapped my thumb with heavy padding and push the coin hard and fast, the coin comes back and the quick jab registered the payment. It was great for long distance chats with my gf  :)

@CPFC1905 @Stormbringer Are you old enough to remember those phones?
Remember them? I occasionally helped my Dad empty them.  Keeping it 70's relevant, he was a GPO engineer so sometimes he'd be called out on a weekend to repair them and gather the cash too.  There was a lot of 2p coins to be counted.

The iconic red boxes went from being a first line of communication to relic of the dark ages in a very short period.   On the plus side, it's one less thing for drunk drivers to collide with and they were proper solid, too.
@Stormbringer You guys are more aged than I thought, although still much younger than me I think.
@CPFC1905 Thanks for sharing a slice of your fun childhood experience. I thought it would be under BT territory, GPO is what the post office was/is known as in India too (no surprise there).

Oh ya the red boxes... I would reluctantly hang up and leave quickly when there was someone waiting impatiently (can't blame him). Why the rush to get away? Didn't want the bloke to confront me with 'WTF were you taking to with an out-of-order phone?'

Stories of activity in, and from, those boxes are legion.  Yes, originally Post Office, the GPO, then British Telecom and finally BT.  Ah, Mrs Thatch' .......
Dad worked from them all unbroken,  he left the RAF and did his whole 'working life' with them.
Other girls may try to take me away

Just got back from seeing One Battle After Another.  Great movie.  One of the best I’ve seen in a while.
Really want to see it - feel it might be a little to on the nose and just make me upset at the state of affairs.

Kind of like how I used to enjoy Handmaid’s Tale - but now it seems like a reality we are
headed for and it just isn’t entertaining with that backdrop.

I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.

Watching the news of all the beach erosion up and down the east coast. They keep having to rebuild HWY12 on the outer banks in NC and all the houses that are impacted by coastal storm erosion.
This is a system that is used successfully in SA and was wondering if this isn’t an option over here.

  • Very neat, @johnmitchell. The design looks like they’d be very effective in diffusing big waves. Wow, 10,000 are required for one kilometre of coastline.

That's more frequent than one every four inches. Even stacked in depth it doesn't seem that is consistent with the size of the things. I detect either poor reporting or editing on the reference.

It will never be accepted. Can you imagine women trying to sun tan on them? And what about all of the slip and fall lawsuits? Better to ban permanent construction on barrier island, but just as unlikely to happen.

Going to see an incredible musician tonight - French-Algerian guitarist Pierre Bensusan. He was the teacher of one of my teachers and is a real musician’s musician. Always puts on an incredible show. Taking my main squeeze and having dinner beforehand.
    You might enjoy this album:

Album - Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Two songs you specifically may enjoy are:

    • Lumiere by Lorien Testard, Alice Duport-Percier
    • Lumiere - Lumiere a l'Aube by Lorien Testard
It is definitely off the beaten path, but I find very good.  Its backstory is pretty bonkers, composer had never composed any commercial music before this and was found on a tiny music forum that has since been deleted by a video game director who was starting his very fist solo project also - which is an whole'nother crazy story.

Thanks for the recommendations, Ozzie. Really liked both. The instrumental guitar version, Lumière à l’Aube, was pretty cool.

Something about the strings and mood made of thr vocal rendition me think of Agnes Obel. I think I’ve mentioned her in the past. Her album “Aventine” is exceptional, IMO. Love the strings!

    Liking these exchanges.

@Ozzie_Isaac Great minds bumping some threads, I was thinking the same. Whenever a bunch of new bot posts appear, just scroll past them and bump the next 20-30 legit posts. If you see a bunch of "1 New" by the same member you can ignore them. This will help in keeping the forum afloat.
