I despise gridlock. That being said, rules and procedure that can be leveraged to halt progress are a double edged sword.  When our elected officials are as divided as they are today, it can be a useful check against extreme policy. But when used to kill reasonable legislation because from a partisan perspective we don't want the other team to be seen with a win, it hurts us all.

The problem isn't the rules, it's who our ruling class has become, and in turn, how we've followed. I truly think the tail has been wagging the dog in pursuit of accumulating power and holding on to it, more than any other time in our history.

With a little quick Googling, the first US filibuster was used September 22, 1789. With that said, it’s been around long enough to be left alone. In my humble opinion of course. 

I have never liked for anyone to try and change the rules for their own benefit or personal gain. Be it a sports league, a group of people, a church etc etc. As much as I admire Trump, I hope he don’t mess with it. He won the White House, has control of the Senate and probably the House. Google some more. The filibuster itself is just endless debate.   In order to prevent a vote from occurring, one had to remain on the floor of the chamber and continue to speak against it.  Sometime in the 1970's this changed.  The 70's saw the introduction of the “silent filibuster,” which meant a group of senators could prevent a vote with a filibuster indefinitely without actually speaking.

The real problem is not so much the filibuster but the threshold number of votes needed to end it, which is called cloture.  This change wasn't introduced until 1917.   At the moment, this is 60 votes.  What this means in practice is that many bills that have majority support in the Senate simply never come up for a vote. 

That isn't terribly democratic, is it?  

The fact of the matter is, the rules have been changed several times.  That's why these days the filibuster isn't invoked for certain things, like Presidential appointments or reconciliation bills.  These are all changes that have come about over the past half century or so. 

Don't get me wrong, I hope the GOP won't change it either!  But Trump will push them to for sure.  I guarantee it.

I think we have a tendency to want to find one big reason to explain events, regardless of what they are.  It’s just kind of a human thing, to try and simplify a world that’s increasingly complex.  All of that is to say that I think there are lots of reasons why Trump won the election.  I see a lot of people here, on both the right and the left, who are all too eager to chime in and try and say it just confirms one of their priors.  

As I indicated earlier in the thread, my operating assumption for some time has been that Trump was going to win.  I had lots of reasons for this belief, but frankly the main one was that there are lots of people who rightfully see things as being more expensive, and they are blaming the party in the White House for it.  I don’t think that diagnosis on their part is correct, but it seems clear that’s what they believe.  People hate inflation, and they want someone to blame for it.  They have also been sold a bill of goods, because there is nothing in any one of the things Trump is planning to do that will cause prices to come back down to 2020 levels. If anything, what he’s proposing will exacerbate inflation.  

I have a hard time believing that lots of Americans actually support some of the more cruel policies Trump has been advocating, like mass deportation.  But maybe that’s just naïveté on my part.  Time will tell.  

So it seems you are basically telling us it doesn’t matter what party is in place and their policies have little effect on what we are seeing. 

Trump was more business friendly. You simply can’t tax the country into prosperity. Then we have the massive influx of illegal immigrates. We know why they wanted it but you can’t blame Americans for wanting an immigration system that’s fair to everyone else. Even the Latinos here voted in

And you will not admit it but many could see how Trump was constantly being attacked by his political opponents with countless lawsuits and made up garbage. When they see how unjustly he was treated they could not stand by and see such an abuse of power. 

The democrats are trying to point fingers and analyze why they lost but they don’t want to change how they treat Americans. Their power and control is all they want.

It should be noted that many brave patriots have suddenly become more vocal on the forum. Somehow, someone "not losing" an election drove them underground for a few years, but now they're back out of the woodwork.

 Democrats never stop man, 2016-2020 the home page of this forum 80% trump bashing 20% bbq posts. Look at Reddit, melting down. You guys never stop crying and pushing your agenda and if someone doesn’t agree with it you attack by throwing tantrums or acting like you are better than everyone who didn’t vote with you. A few weeks ago a member posted that it’s great that we supply weapons to kill Russians, I was more of the opinion that war is bad, kids fighting kids and no one wants to be there, so I was accused of “publicly supporting Putin”.  I guess the republicans don’t see a need to push their agenda online and be attacked by a bunch of keyboard cowboys.

Isn’t this, essentially, one big tantrum? It sure reads like one.

Regarding @caliking you might extend him a measure of grace.  Imagine how your view of the world might be influenced by your spouse receiving a letter (placed in your mailbox) that looks like this:

I hadn’t saved it on my computer.  It was in my SMS text history.  I had to go and dig it out.

I understand you’re upset that Reddit isn’t a fun place with cat pics and frog memes for you anymore, but … this can be a fun place?  You know, like one where people post their cooks and recipes?  You might want to try that out for a bit.
