Just like Speaker Johnson - term limits for thee, but not for me.

As much as it pains me to defend Nikki here, she did say the *same* position.

Anyway, term limits of five years are pretty dumb to insist on when you’re running for a position that lasts eight if you’re successful.

The term limits challenge was run up the legal flag pole in the early-mid 1990's and shot down by the courts.  Worth going again but not holding out any hope here.

She makes a distinction between term limits for politicians and for bureaucrats. For Congress she supports the U.S. Term Limits  constitutional amendment of three (3) House terms and two (2) Senate terms. SCOTUS only prohibited term limits imposed by the states. The amendment would overrule SCOTUS.

By bureaucrats I believe she means to refer to high ranking federal employees - probably with the intent to screw folks like Fauci and other upper level folks the nutters don't like. I could be wrong about that tho.

Most of the analysis I’ve read about term
limits is that it would ironically give more power to lobbyists, not less.

I think it’s one of those things that sounds good to the public but which there’s not much substance to back it up.

Congress needs reform, don’t get me wrong, but I think a much bigger bang for the buck (pun intended) would come from campaign finance reform.

  • Term limits would be largely unnecessary if they could overturn Citizens United, which strangely enough had the support of bought-and-paid-for Clarence Thomas.

Haley In Unstoppable Drive Toward Second Place

Article title made me chuckle. Will the Koch money really help?

Read thru this article but then this statement at the end jumped out at me:

It’s Trump’s party. Not only does he own it, but the forces that propelled him to ownership and keep him there are ones that recoil at the kind of oligarch stage-directing and money that paradoxically funds the entire party, including Trump’s own dominance of the party.

I seriously doubt that "the forces that keep him there" have any friggin' clue about how the oligarchs fund the republican/trumplican party, and their propaganda arms (disguised as "news" organizations) keep non-issues (LGBT, Miller Lite, gradeschool indoctrination, war against Xmas, etc) at the forefront to keep them voting against their own basic interests.

EDIT:  And I did see an article on at least two of my sources today that the republican/trumplican party, on a national level, are scrambling for money; the deep-pocket donors like the Kochs (may they be reunited soon) aren't getting what they want, and the small-dollar donors' checks are only going into the pockets of rather incompetent defense lawyers.
Once again, we live in Interesting Times.

It was quite a performance across the board.  I actually thought that it was DeSantis's best showing but that got him to level ground last night.  Haley took the slings and arrows and gave as good as she got.  She wasn't as dominant as in prior debates but was steady and reasoned.  Ramaswamy was in over his head.  He needs to give it up.  Christie was throwing haymaker punches toward CHEETO and some of the participants last night.  He answered the questions, unlike the others who danced around the third rail of CHEETO.
Nothing changed and won't but good theater.  FWIW-

    From Politico:

Three weeks out from the Iowa caucuses, there’s plenty of smart speculation that Florida Gov. RON DeSANTIS’ presidential bid is toast.

First, there was the news that his super PAC, Never Back Down, was doing just that — backing down, at least on $2.5 million worth of TV ads. This, following months of infighting over strategy in DeSantis’ orbit.

Now, NYT’s Shane Goldmacher, Maggie Haberman and Nicholas Nehamas have penned what amounts to DeSantis’ campaign obituary— and the tick-tock of why he fell despite all the early hype over his White House bid.

    Some eye-popping excerpts:

    — On spending priorities: “Federal records show that, by the time of the Iowa caucuses, the DeSantis campaign is on pace to spend significantly more on private jets — the governor’s preferred mode of travel — than on airing television ads.”

    — On the knives out for him: “Remarkably, in a race [DONALDTRUMP has dominated for eight months, it is Mr. DeSantis who has sustained the most negative advertising — nearly $35 million in super PAC attacks as of Saturday, more than Mr. Trump and every other G.O.P. contender combined.”

    — On puzzling strategy decisions: “Never Back Down bragged about knocking on two million doors by September — but more than 700,000 were households outside the key early states of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.”

    — On disagreements between the PAC and campaign: “Some of the money was saved by not running digital ads. Never Back Down has paid for only a single Facebook ad, in South Carolina, since late September and nothing on Google or YouTube since the end of October, maddening the campaign team.”

This quote pretty much sums it up: “If the great promise of the DeSantis candidacy was Trump without the baggage, STUART STEVENS, a top strategist on MITT ROMNEY’s 2012 presidential campaign, said that what Republicans got instead was ‘TED CRUZ without the personality.’”

Been all over the news, especially the part that it took her campaign 12 hours to issue the damage control release.

Sadly, her original answer is not that offensive, when contrasted with what is spewed by the front runner on a daily basis.
