  • When buying used, the best approach in my experience is to find two comparable cars at two different dealerships, and play one off against the other.

@alaskanassasin I had to double take. At first I saw the $57k sticker but the dealer mark up for “limited” availability is $10k, so it’s $68k geez.

Ahhh, the good ole ADM. Toyota swears their dealers don’t participate in that practice…..
Like I told my salesman, buyers have a way of remembering who screwed them on auto deals and the bitterness is long lasting.  How can a dealership command a 10k market adjustment and expect a buyer to return for repeat business or even recommend them to someone else.  Baddddd for business, just plain ole badddddd.  MSRP is understandable with market conditions the way they are.
I was in the market this time last year and went to a toyota dealer to buy a new 4runner. We agreed to a price in writing online and I left my house to drive up there and sign paperwork. The salesman assured me the car would be waiting for me washed and ready to drive away Well it was alright, driven away by another buyer. That somehow took my car right out from under me. I was pissed beyond belief. I told them to pound sand and I would be calling Toyota Corporate which I did.

So that same evening I went to the Toyota dealer that I bought my last 4runner from. They had one in stock that I had previously looked at. The salesman and I agree to a deal with a handshake and then they went and ran my credit to see if they could beat my credit union interest rate and grab paperwork. He comes back and tells me he can't sell me the vehicle for that price. That the price he told me was before taxes. BS, I had the quote we just agreed to on paper and it included taxes. They still wouldn't honor it, so I told them to pound sand and called Corporate. I went and bought a more expensive Lexus GX460 two days later.

Most dealers don't give a crap about you. They are deliberately there to screw you any way they can.
Yeah, I hear ya.  Ive had my share of those games attempted on me, too.  Not saying that car sales folks are bad people....but I couldn't sleep at night after playing those games on good people.  I have good friends and family in the business and I've told them several times that it is best we don't talk religion, politics or auto sales.  :). And trust me, I know everyone has to eat and pay the light bill.....but the games are not necessary.
The problem with a problem is that you don't know it's a problem until it's a problem, and that is a big problem.

I’m very good friends with the owners of the dealerships we buy from. The last 2 car buys were literally the easiest I’ve ever done. I expect the Bronco purchase in the next 30 ish days to be the same. Don’t deal with salesmen, paperwork done before I get there. Drop off one, pickup the new. They own 7-8 different lines, so picking something we like is fairly easy as well.

USAA used to provide that service to military folks and Ron Gronkowski, but they didn't anymore when I bought my Audi a couple years ago.

This. If you are hard-nosed about negotiating, you could get an ever better price. I doubled the Costco "discount" when buying a Subaru Outback a few years ago. Given, supply/demand has changed the game considerably these days.

I'm not a car guy, and don't see the point in buying cars brand new, but I've been relatively happy with CarMax.

Swmbo has used USAA and Costco to buy at least 2 of the last 3 cars.

So SWMBO ordered a GLB a couple months ago.  Delivery is scheduled for mid Feb.  She just checked Carmax to see what she could get for her Q5....$36,000!

I told her to sell it now and she can drive my truck until she gets the new car.  Which will force me to fix my Porsche, but it's not like I have to drive anywhere and I have some motorcycles/bikes.... hmmmmmm

Most new car dealers are unscrupulous scum.  The only thing lower are *used*  car dealers.  Watch Tin Men and the car dealers are an order of magnitude worse.

  • I used to enjoy toying with car dealers, this last one I bought almost completely over text, after I picked it up I felt like I needed a shower.  They keep sending me a email regarding customer satisfaction and I won't reply, if you don't have something nice to say yada yada

In all seriousness I hope you get another 150k miles out of it without any major issues. I had to take the softball pitch when it was given.  =)

it's a badge of honor to get high miles out of a Rover...as it is driving an old functional Rover.  People look at you and think: He's either a brilliant mechanic or he's loaded.

(notice to my British friends, the above is hyperbole)

the brits put a french brain in the rover, its always complaining. takes just under 9 quarts oil and complains when its down a half cup,  spare tyre pressure is low when its 35f outside.....its fine when its 25f outside. airbags not working one day, the next its the passenger seat airbag turned off, then everything is fine with the airbags. turn off that stability control in the winter, the french apparently dont know how to drive in the snow, it thinks brake when you apply the gas and cuts out the power when trying to get over a snow bank. new one today, turn volume down and it goes up, up goes up as well, you can over rule it at the steering wheel til cabin temps come up. the old rovers were functional because they didnt have this brain, they just had gauges

hey Ford dudes. I had a 2010 F150 that was a great truck. Anyone comment on how the SYNC thing works these days?  Apple Car Play is a MUST and will be a show stopper. I am a Mac enthusiast and I need my maps, music and contacts.

I drive a 2018 f150 with sync 3, they’re putting v4 in cars now.  It’s better than what I had in my 2011 and it updates over wifi when parked in the driveway.  It has apple play.  Sync still isn’t a great interface, the Ford map takes some questionable routes, etc., but if you like apple, it’s plug and play.
    Love you bro!
  • Bought our fleet vehicles for the electric & gas utility for the last 20 years.  Enjoyed screwing with the sales people, but reality was fleet prices were set by Ford corporate, and we got damn good pricing.  I also bought my wife a new Lincoln every year (invoice price).  Retired now, so no more discounts.  Just bought her a new Jaguar F-Pace, and dealer sold it for invoice price (cash deal).  I still like to deal/negotiate in person with a local dealership,  and not do the internet car buying thing.

The new features are coming out and lots are starting to fill up.  I think we'll trade when we find one equipped the way I want it.  Such as.....

Has anyone in metro Atlanta seen any 2022 Tundra trucks at any Toyota dealerships?

The Teslas feature a "whoopie cushion" setting where you can trigger that noise from any seat.  I hope it uses the closest door speaker, and not a dedicated speaker in the seat cushion...

I think the Tundra is made in Texas.  My '06 Impala SS was made in Toronto.  For me things were simpler before all this globalization stuff.
I like tundras, if I was in that market I would go with the eco boost 3.5l in the f-150, aluminum body should not rust and vehicle technology is way ahead of the tundra
The problem with aluminum, typically found with motor vehicles, and accessories, is galvanic corrosion.

Bare Aluminum readily oxidizes when subjected to normal weather and humidity.

Ford has addressed the issues they had during the class action suits for aluminum corrosion, a couple years ago. I believe they are doing somewhat better.

Kind of in the market myself for a couple of new vehicles. This post has been most helpful.

Unfortunately this is going to become even more common especially with the EVs. This is how they will make their money since maintenance costs will drop. We as Americans are already accustomed to paying subscriptions for everything so why not my safety features in my vehicle too?

My RX and GX already have this. Lexus has been doing it for a long time. I just don't pay the subscription and start my car like normal. I guess if you live in a cold climate and want to start your car so you aren't freezing it's a big deal but anywhere with mild winters it's not an issue. Now if eventually we all get EVs and the key goes away completely and the only way to start it is with a subscription then I think more people will complain.

Thanks for posting.  Not totally surprised.  Be interesting to see how they handle the situation.  No worse than my friend with a 21 Denali that had lifter issues at 3600 miles.  For me that drove me away from GM, period.
