I am a bit embarrassed at how excited this is making me.

83 pages of rice cooking instructions too!

This thing is sexy!  Ambidextrous spoon holders too.

what are the dimensions of that thing, ive wanted one for years but I only need a cheap one that makes a few cups at a time.

    I've got a Zojirushi NS-LGC05XB which is a smaller 3 cup model. It's footprint is about 9"x12".

I have an Aroma too.  It does rice well.  A little.in consistent, and will burn to the bottom with the warmer.  It also struggles with some of the short and medium grain rice I like...does great with Jasmine and Uncle Bens parboiled though.
A lady I worked with at TRW suggested I spritz the bowl with Pam cooking spray before adding the rice and water, and that works well.  If I do end up leaving the rice in for multiple hours on Warm, yeah it crisps up a bit but it doesn't stick at all, and I don't mind a little "soccarat" with my chinese food...  (and I use "Cal-Rose" rice most of the time, which is a shorter-grain, no issues).

And that reminds me: does anyone have a favorite recipe/technique for spanish/mexican rice in a rice cooker?  Everything I've tried so far is either quite fussy or not very good.

Mexican rice I do on a stove top.  I found and toasting the rice a bit first helps.  Maybe you can toast it then put it in the rice cooker?

  • Thanks @Botch and @HeavyG. I have a hard time babysitting rice for some reason, dumb question but can you overcook rice in one of these?

Not really.  The cheaper ones will dry the rice out, but the Zoji is supposed to do real good at keeping warm.  Supposedly even for 24hrs.

That’s my problem I lose track of time, and I can’t get my burner turned down enough to keep it from sticking to the pan, if I could toss in some rice and water and forget about it until I need it that would be great.

  • While I have you @Ozzie_Isaac which diffuser are you using on your stove? I would rather use one of those for simmering than trying to turn the burner down so low it might flame out.

While I don’t love the concept of smart speakers generally, they are awesome for setting timers while cooking.
  • I hear you @GrateEggspectations, my issue and maybe there is a trick to it but say my rice is cooked perfectly but my other preps are 10 minutes behind, how do I keep the rice from overcooking? Rinse it and reheat?

I use this cheapie, it works surprisingly well.  I removed the handle and bent the tabs so it won't scratch my enamel pots.

Depending on how I feel, sometimes I cook rice like pasta.  I’m sure this is a cardinal sin somewhere.

If you pay attention to the water/rice ratios and get them at least reasonably close I don't think you could actually overcook rice in a rice cooker. They basically sense the temperature and know that when the temp gets a few degrees above boiling that all the water has been absorbed so they stop and just go into the keep warm mode.

They're about as foolproof as a cooking tool as sous vide - just set it and forget it and go do something else. You can load them up overnight and set them to be finished at a time of your choosing - I do that frequently with steel cut oats and have them ready in the morning.

I often make rice and then have it sit for a bit. I use the stovetop and once it’s to the consistency I like, simply take it off the heat and put a lid on top (to prevent the moisture from escaping). If you’re finding that your rice is clumpy or has an off consistency using this approach, then I think it’s likely you’re probably not rinsing off enough of the starch prior to cooking.
  • I will give that a shot @GrateEggspectations thanks.

Bummer man.  More often than not, when the deal seems to be too good to be true, it often isn’t.

Did you get shipping notice email before it got cancelled?

I got order shipped email last night for the first order, the second order shipped email came this morning. No cancellation email yet, fingers crossed. However, when I tried tracking at Purolator site it says no information available yet, which probably means pickup is still pending so I'm not out of the woods yet I guess.

No, no shipping notice email. Maybe you got lucky

Edit, I got an email saying that the product moved fast and the stock was depleted before mine was able to ship

Hope so. Perhaps it's the delivery distance/cost, IIRC you are way up north, what was your Purolator charge that they have to eat? Mine is 43.37 for the four-bag order.

Woohoo! first order got picked up, three boxes with 2 bags in each, total 249lb, coming from the hammer, ETA Monday Feb 6. Hoping second  order comes separately so the delivery guy won't be extra pi**ed.

$76 for 5 (thought i ordered 4 but was wrong), pretty sure it would come to me from Winnipeg. I bet they shipped to the lowest cost distances first
