Someone talk me out of buying my wife a large SUV (Expedition, Tahoe etc). She claims she needs the room w/2 kids, little league sports equipment and all her sales job detritus. I suggested a minivan and she gave me the stink eye.
Been down that road and landed with an Expedition.  Great soccer hauler, especially if they end up with the traveling team deal.  She wanted the SUV and a minivan was never on the radar.  Early on only around 5-7K miles/year, then 12-15K/yr for about a 4 year run.  Around 80% of that mileage was kid sport related.  FWIW-
I never understood soccer mom equating to need for large SUV and you mention soccer hauler. Seems like except basketball, soccer requires about the least amount of gear
I'm past all this, but you obviously have not lived it.

Let's say there's a weekend tournament. Oh wait, let's say it's almost every weekend. you are often traveling hours away to a tournament with a variable schedule. You have usually multiple kids, luggage, a very large cooler, pop up tent, a travel grill, chairs. Am I forgetting anything? Possibly. This goes for soccer, baseball, softball, horseback riding, etc etc

    It's a lot.

@Ozzie_Isaac The market is that someone will sell anything for any amount and to be a market, someone will buy.  I have been down that replacement road twice, I have the records of what I now own (don't care to look it up) and the surgeries resulted in noticeable range of motion improvements.
I did ask the surgeons ( 18 months apart) if I could retain a piece of the femur.  Both cited legalese as to "no chance."
At least when I come out of the oven on the other end the metal pieces will be available for sale by my kids.  So that's a bonus.  =)

A very good friend of mine almost died in a motorcycle accident on Father's Day.  His leg has $60k worth of rods and pins and stuff in it.  It isn't healing right, so they may have to yank it all out, break out the hacksaw and get to work rejiggering his leg.  I told him he should use the parts to make a suicide shift for his new bike.  That got me to wondering what the parts go for on the secondary market.  Pretty awful depreciation if you ask me, or he got screwed on his purchase.

I have a stainless steel plate and screws stashed somewhere that was in my leg in the 70s.

I'm a little less cynical since I'm currently knee deep it it, but I get your point. Sure you can join a travel team but there's also city and county recreational leagues that are local and less competitive, at least in our area. Not every kid is good enough to join a traveling team (or the parents don't have the time), so it's not like that's the only option. We haven't hit that age yet in baseball, but wrestling is all travel so we're getting a taste of it.

As for playing in the yard under the watch of helicopter parents, I dunno... our kids are playing whiffle ball in the cow pastures and sliding home underneath an electric fence. Extra points awarded for accidental electrocutions or face planting in cow ****.

its strange, the towns around me split off into several traveling teams, everything was mainly local towns playing each other before.  a kid not good in a sport or not really interested in it should not have to travel a hundred or so miles to play a game.  where i grew up, they did away with most of the ball fields, theres not even a place to play a mud football pickup game anymore,. those were better with zero adults involved. pond hockey is pretty much gone, you need adults now and a rink

Bought a front wheel drive Odyssey when eldest started university in 2000, zero car payments. All three attended universities out of town, I guess you can call it college dad hauler. Two of them are parents now and the Odyssey is still chugging in spite of zero maintenance (except oil changes) last 5+ years. Just minor rust around rear wheel wells, not bad considering our heavy winter road salting, I had it sprayed annually for rust prevention in the first decade though. Ability to haul 4x8 plywood flat inside is just gravy on top.

Most memorable trips were taking eldest to and from Notre Dame University for a semester… parents, three grown kids, mattress, desk, chairs, cooking utensils, winter gears, kitchen supplies, small appliances, linens, etc; no pets and kitchen sink though 😂. On our drive home on Christmas Eve it was snowing steadily but not heavy, we gave up counting the number of vehicles that ended up on the shoulder or in the ditch on the interstates, most of them 4-wheel drive invincible SUVs of course.

My buddy bought this chamber sealer from Walmart on my recommendation.  Works great so far.  He’s been using mine up until now.  He’s my friend that takes my boat out once or twice a week.  I have unlimited fish from the relationship.
Would this have room for a 4-5 lb chicken?  I raise my own birds and would love one if it would work.
Pompano and sea trout?  I’m in SW Florida right now and waiting for the pompano to show up .
@GlennM Absolutely it would work.  It's huge and there's a bottom tray that is hard to see in the pics but it comes out for extra room.  I think that was $385.  My VacMaster VP215 retails for closer to 1k and it's about the same size.

That's pompano and Spanish mackerel.  They were off-shore.  They caught some red snapper but had to throw back, season ended Jan 1.   They've been catching lots of pompano lately, sometimes 50-60 per trip.  Also cobia, barracuda, sharks, etc.

Interesting. I've been curious about them. Now that I've got an offset and a pizza oven I'm not using the BGE for smoking or roasting, it's strictly a grill now.  I kinda like the idea of a hybrid Kamado/Kettle....

We're not keeping any barracuda or sharks.

You have to reel snapper up fast.  Sometimes the sharks get most of them on that journey up or even when you're pulling them out of the water.   Not uncommon to pull out just the head.

That's probably from ciguatera which is from eating fish that eat this dinoflaggelate (sp?) or the coral they live on.  You can get that from other fish too.

Any reef fish can cause ciguatera poisoning, but species such as barracuda, grouper, red snapper, moray eel, amberjack, parrotfish, hogfish, sturgeonfish, kingfish, coral trout, and sea bass are the most commonly affected.  - from google
