Last time I checked, these teams are private businesses. How does the public decide the fate of a name? Tell Jerry Jones that the Cowboys name is offensive to the Indians.

There are probably 12-15 teams that could use a name change in light of Washington’s situation. Where does it stop? “I’m an atheist (not really) and the Saints name bothers me. Can’t call em the hamburgers, might offend the vegans!

I think Washington Possums would be most fitting as they play dead at home and get killed on the road (not mine - saw it on Imgur).

Atlanta Crackers would offend 0% of the population.
You should stop now. Would be glad to chat with you about it in person.
Curious if you are aware that was the minor league baseball team here from 1901 until the Braves came in ‘65.

Speaking of "Braves" the Washington Redskins franchise was originally known as the Boston Braves during their first year before they changed to the Boston Redskins a year later and then, of course, to Washington Redskins when they moved to D.C. a few years later.

My high school mascot were also the Redskins.  There was a push to change the name when I was in high school.  It didn’t happen until about five years later, but this was almost 20 years ago.

That has been tried. The NBA Washington Wizards were once the Bullets. It was changed in '97 as the owner didn't want to be associated with any violent connotations.

But aren’t they going to have to change the name of the state also?

I think that can wait until after DC achieves statehood.

Surprised it’s taken this long to change. I know Snyder has said in the past that as long as he owns the team the name would not change, but in today’s climate that’ll be hard to hold onto with sponsors dropping, and the almighty $ reigns supreme.

It’s been mentioned before be Washington Redtails would appease the masses.

But I do like the Warriors sound of it.

The Offended Masses wouldn’t have a clue who the Redtail’s were.  Hence the reason they desecrated the Col Robert Shaw and 54th Massachusetts monument .

Maybe the show Community had it correct when they renamed their school mascot. I think they should just rename the team The Humans.

  • Sure seems like the folks who are the most upset about this aren’t people who were ever fans of the team to begin with.

The original efforts to change the team name started a few years after WWII so it's not as if this is just a recent flurry of woke/pc/snowflake/cancel culture.
But you are probably right, most folks who dislike the current name probably aren't fans of the team - or any NFL team for that matter.

Until this latest push I was firmly in the camp of "where you stand is where you sit".
Being an old Raiders fan I thoroughly enjoyed when the Raiders pounded the 'Skins in Super Bowl 18.  But being a Raiders fan means you can't stand any other team in the AFC West so it was with great pleasure that Doug Williams and the 'Skins destroyed the Broncos in Super Bowl 22.
Now several decades on my question is, "Will Daniel Snyder sell the team or change the name?"
    No worries-that's all I've got here.   B)

@lousubcap as a fan, I sure hope he sells the team. I think the name change without a change in ownership is more likely, though.

I'm so sick of this "pc" movement.  Leave well enough alone.  99% of Native Americans polled had no problem with the name.  It's the activist left trying to make trouble where none exists!
