SIL has a great collection of guitars that his dad has helped him with over the years. I’ll try to get a pic or two overvthe holidays. I love music, it’s a major part of my life but I have less than zero talent. True story, a nun told me in 3rd grade that she knew that God didn’t want me to ever sing again.

That’s really funny. Your singing made baby Jesus cry.

I never thought of it that way. Good one. My children got both my love of music and my musical talent.
  • Ok- back to John Prine. This just got
me all fired up because his songs were a big part of why I picked up a guitar in the first place.

My oldest can actually play and sing. I hope I had some influence on that but he comes by his talent organically.

I cant play as well as John Prine (although pretty close) but I can sing like him :). As with Bob Dylan, The man is a national treasure but golden pipes were not his spiritual gift.

  • For anyone who loves JP/Bob Dylan type stuff (poets who play guitar to get the words out)  you should check out the following:

    Jason Isbel
    Hayes Carll
    Sturgill Simpson
    Robert Earl Keen
    Old 97’s
    Wilco/Uncle Tupelo
    Ryan Adams/Whiskey Town

would love to hear some of your faves.

Always felt a bit this way about a national treasure of ours - Neil Young, in that I don’t think he has a great voice, but somehow, it still seems to work.

I was a Prine fan back in the "John Prine" and "Bruised Orange" era. He was a hell of a songwriter. Sam Stone is the saddest song I ever heard.

Love this thread, and this list!

I got obsessed with Isbell a few years ago, which led me into Prine and everybody else on your list, and more. (I gotta put John Moreland into your list too, he is phenomenal).

I've seen Prine twice now, and taking my wife and boys to see him on tour this spring - they love his new album!

His long time guitarist, Jason Wilbur, is also awesome, super nice guy... I've been trying to learn the guitar, and even took a few lessons with him over Skype.

Steve Earle is another great singer/writer that is often overlooked. This is one his best.

My Beautiful Wife and I do volunteer work for the local public radio station here in Louisville.
    @The Cen-Tex Smoker
Everyone of these artists are performers at our sponsored "Waterfront Wednesdays".
We work their merchandise both during the shows, and get in free.
Another one you may enjoy is JJ gray and MOFRO. Great blues, great singer/song writer, and was at Bourbon and Beyond this past year. Hell of a show × 1000.

I had heard that Mr. Peabody's coal train had hauled Muhlenburg County away, glad to hear it is still at least somewhat intact.

Amazing opportunity to see him on his home turf - I'm deeply envious.
