I know a really good jewelry designer / maker. She sends me ideas, I send her money and I get the gifts mailed to my office address. No actual shopping involved.

Found and bought the vehicle- really dislike buying depreciating assets but the smile on my daughters face made it almost worth it.  Having a couple drinks to wash away the pain of writing the check.

What are the key features?  I installed the nest doorbell cam and it’s pretty sweet, but the subscription fees for 4 cameras is steeper than I’d like

There's a replacement for the subscription that's supposedly free, but it's around $34/year for their cloud services that archive everything detected.  If you don't use either, you can only store stuff you respond to, which is a no-go for us.  But we have an 8-camera 1080p surveillance system with DVR.

Only reason I bought it was because it was reduced from $199 to 79 on woot!

But I like it, and the neighborhood blog feature is interesting.  Easy to set everything up.

@nolaegghead what 8 camera system do you have? I am in the market for one.  Looking for DVD  so there is no recurring charges. I need 3 cameras to be WiFi/wireless, and the others can be wired.  All need to have night vision. Really only need 6 cameras, but 8 is fine as well.  Thoughts?

My whole family has Lorex either DVR or NVR systems. My brothers and mine are POE wired. 8 cameras with NVR for $750 at Costco. We put a wireless WiFi system at the lake house. Biggest downside to these is they are battery powered. Gotta charge em at least once a month. That system is 6 cams with NVR for $500

@Sea2Ski I'll look.  We bought it from Costco.  We didn't need 8 cameras either, so there are some that are extraneous.  Has a DVR, so no service contract.  There are IP cameras that are PoE, but ours is BNC.  We bought probably 4 years ago.  Works great and a magnitude of order better quality than our old system.  Came with 2 super high quality cameras and 6 lesser.  But they're all good, the high quality cameras really just can focus and get more color at night over the others, which go more or less monochrome in darkness.

Just having cameras around deters crime.  We have (knock on wood) no problems although we're in a pretty high crime urban area.

I would avoid anything wireless or battery powered if you have the resources to run hard-wires.  Not that anyone who robs your house is sophisticated to have a jammer, but despite that being possible, wifi can get flaky in highly densely populated areas.  I have three WAPs, but they are not mesh, everything is hardwired.  Reliability in our systems is damn near 100%.  Make sure you hide/lock up the DVR because any professional knows to destroy/steal the DVR.  There's an advantage to cloud services or using rsync to mirror your stuff on a NAS.

    Battery backup is your friend.

I have two of the Ring wireless stick up cameras outside and they are hooked up to solar panels which so far have kept them fully charged. Also have the Ring front doorbell and am really happy with the whole system.

I think you need a cam in your underground meat locker.  Live feed that to the web so we can see what you have in there.  We can watch what you are removing and decide if we randomly want to come have dinner with you.

@marysvilleksegghead - Looking forward to your review.  On-line specialty beef suppliers are becoming more and more prevalent.  I am always game to try a new source when recommended by a member here.  So, time will tell.  No pressure!! =)
