RTIC or Yeti?

lwrehm Posts: 381
I have decided to make the jump and get a new cooler, 45 quart (or there abouts).  I was set on getting an RTIC due to cost, but then found out I can get a 30% discount on a Yeti which will put the totals within the $20-$20 dollar range.  I know we have both RTIC and Yeti fans here so what say you?

My wife bought me a Yeti 75 with a 20% discount for my birthday a few years ago, love it but with other options out there not sure I’d spend the extra cash for the name if/when I get another cooler.  There’s a ton of comparisons online so if I were you I’d nerd out on those for a bit to see what sways you given you’re gonna be so close in price.  Doesn’t the RTIC have a divider system?

Anyways, both seem to hold ice for a ridiculously long time so kind of a toss up in my opinion if within $20.  I often leave the ice/water in my Yeti when we get back from trips just to see how long it lasts and it’s pretty amazing.  During the summer I’ll just leave beers in it after a gathering and drink from it for days while out grilling etc.
  • That new Yeti in gray is pretty sweet.

I have a Yeti 75. It’s nice but way too heavy.

    The 45 is the best.

  • I have a yeti and a Rtic and like them equally. That being said I have a yeti 65 and a Coleman marine extreme 65. I iced them both down and left them in the boat, Coleman in the front and yeti in the back in the shade, when I was on vacation last summer.  The Coleman held ice over twice as long as the yeti. The yeti is no doubt a tougher cooler as I’ve had to change the hinges and handles multiple times on the Coleman but the yeti’s ice storage is nowhere near as good as the cheaper Coleman. Same for rtic too but I didn’t think that was a fair comparison since the rtic is a smaller cooler.

just to add a little more to the mix I was yeti king for a while (was able to get them at cost) then one day some guy came to me and said try pelican which I did and since sold all my yeti (and made money) and now I have 26, 40, 58, 70 pelican anything bigger is just to heavy for a single person to manage IMO> I dont see any difference in the construction between the 2 and the price is about the same I think pelican is a few dollars less, but the pelican holds ice better for some reason. On my boat the pelican 70 with the same amount of ice keeps 3 days longer then my yeti 75 (4-5 days) and holds more as well which is why i got rid of the yeti and kept pelican, plus I like the latches better on the pelican although it weighs more then the yeti plus pelican warranty is life time i think yeti is 5 years. I hope I confused you more, if so job done good luck I dont think you can go wrong with any of these brands as they re all great products

Little derail here but I use a dry ice/regular ice combo for camping or in scenarios like my fridge crapping our like it did last year.  Doing this will keep things cool in any chest for a long time.  Lived out of the Yeti and my kegerator for a week!

@mlc2013  I have the 45.  It's superior in every way to the Yeti and RTIC except it's just heavy and big.  No wheels on mine.

My go to coolers are the soft side RTICs, really depends on the application.

This is pure conjecture but I feel like Yeti came out with the high end cooler first and the rest are riding on their coattails, for that reason I would go Yeti.

I looked at those options too and went with Orca. Great reviews, holds ice just as long if not longer, and made in USA.

Yeti would take over the refrigerator market if they made one.  I bet it would keep things cool year round!  Even make ice!!!  (I've made that joke here before and I'm going to keep trying it until I get a dang reaction - it's gold Jerry, GOLD!)

My BIL got me an Orca 45.  I have Yeti, and I like both the same.

Another moment in history, brought you you by NOLA in conjunction with Wikipedia:

On April 20, 2018, the National Rifle Association issued a letter to members saying that Yeti had stopped doing business with The NRA.[10] This coincided with the 2018 NRA boycott following the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Objections from NRA members included destroying Yeti coolers with guns and explosives. Yeti issued a public statement on April 23 denying they were severing ties with the NRA, and calling the NRA's statement inaccurate. The statement explained that the company had contacted various organizations "eliminating a group of outdated discounting programs" and had offered the NRA Foundation a customization program also offered to other organizations and consumers. Yeti said that it was unwavering in its commitment to the Second Amendment.[11] On April 24 the NRA disputed Yeti's statement, explaining that Yeti had instructed the NRA to remove the Yeti name and logo from all digital assets, and had delivered a notice terminating an agreement that was in place for 7 years.[11][12]

On May 8, 2018, the NRA announced that they had distributed 100,000 free stickers, with the phrase "I Stand with the NRA Foundation", during their annual meeting that took place in Dallas, Texas. The NRA promotion urged Yeti cooler owners to cover the Yeti logo, rather than destroy the coolers.[13]

I don’t typically choose Cache for its own sake but in the case of Yeti (and BGE), I have and it’s fun.  Sure I have substantive reasons to have a Yeti (and BGE) but there is also the Cache.  I don’t usually choose the Cache- but in these cases I have.  I keep a smallish Yeti in the back of my SUV for groceries in hot weather.  It makes me happy.

They just knew how to make it cool enough that people for people to drop the extra money for the high end ones.  Just like we didn't invent lump charcoal, but with good marketing and quality control we got people to spend the extra money on the good stuff.

What ticks me off about Yeti is the misleading numbers that appear to customers as capacities.  Their "35" isn't a 35 quart capacity, it's 28.  They only give you the capacity on their marketing material in number of cans or pounds of ice......which YES, you can fit X many cans in it, but then you don't have room for ice.  That "35" doesn't mean anything, but it's a similar exterior dimensions to all other 35 quart coolers.  Why didn't they pick 30?  Then everything is "Designed in Austin, Texas" over all their marketing......SOME coolers are made in the US, but most are still made in Philippines and China.

Pelican for me.  Torrance CA.  I have several of their gun cases and flashlights that are nearly 20 yrs old.  We used to store all of our night vision goggles in them.  Great solid latches rather than rubber w/ build in hasp for locking & built in bottle opener.  Strong handles rather than ropes.  A hose bib on the bottom, and a sloped floor as well for easy offsite draining.  As far as the ice retention, I'm sure they're close.....close enough for me.  But lots more engineering in the Pelican with a lifetime warranty (from a company that's been around forever.)

Just like BGE, Yeti is a fine product with a good enough group of followers [assisted by great marketing] to make it into a household name and status symbol.  It's been in the last 10 yrs that BGE got popular......that didn't happen by accident, nor organically.  Same goes for Yeti, they just the marketing right at the right time.  Good for them.

Like many here I have both.  I can’t really tell the difference.   I had the two yetis before I got the rtic.  As long as you cool the cooler down before you add the food/drink and then ice you’ll be fine.
