  • I'd be curious to see the back of the bag. Manufacturer details, etc.

    I just called the store and they have none.

    EDIT: I asked the guy “do you carry Ozark Oak hardwood lump charcoal?”  Guy says “hold on, I’ll go check.”  A minute or two later, he comes back and says “no”.

    OK... I let my old fashioned fingers to the walking... Talked with a very nice lady and was informed that Harps is selling the remaining inventory of Ozark Oak and that Ozark Oak is NO LONGER BEING PRODUCED!.

    If you folks want some... drive to Harps ... They have the little that remains.  (Might Call Ahead, from the above postings they may be sold out!)

    Kinda a good news bad news... yes, you may be able to get it in limited qtys until inventory is gone.

    @RRP your investment is protected!

    @DoubleEgger you are also correct!

    I'll continue with my "old standard" Rockwood, content in the fact that I have used Ozark Oak and with Rockwood I don't really miss it!

    I still can't believe he couldn't find something better then Cowboy after OO.  My neighbor uses it and one time time he cooked some chicken for us since he already had his egg hot.  I didn't know he was using Cowboy, but my wife and I noticed that it tasted different, like a wood and petroleum taste together.  I asked him later what lump he used and he said Cowboy.  I told him he ought to try Rockwood sometime.  He has, but he never said if he liked it or not.  Rockwood is all I use.  Reminds me I need to get some more.

    I thought I heard at one point that Royal Oak bought out Ozark Oak.  Maybe they are selling it like @DoubleEgger said.

    Best way to find out something is to do it yourself. Took all of three minutes of my day.

    I was told Royal Oak bought out the plant and it is still running today. This plant bags the Royal Oak and a few private label brands. One of those, I'm told is the Kroger house brand. This he saw running on the bagging line in person. I have bought a few bags and it is a quality product. I gave some to another EggHead who had used  OO many times and he told me it was the same as the OO. For me I now use Lazzari Mesquite lump from RD. Great stuff, very dense, low ash and at $14 for 40lbs, the price is right!!

    You probably burn more lump than me but I have not had that same luck with Lazarri. I tried a few bags and it was super sparky, ashy, and had full sized logs of half carbonized wood. I still considered it a decent deal for the cash though. If i had a big stick burner or cooked commercially it would be a no-brainer but I am down to 1 egg and like my fancy Rockwood

    I know that it’s just one man talking here, but I sure wish that OO was still around. Them and Rockwood was my two favorites by miles.
    Like most, I got my hopes up when I saw this post. But like the old saying goes; if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is. Never hurts to hope though.

    Just because it comes from the same plant doesn't mean it's the same lump.  Corvettes are made in an old Chrysler plant....

    Have you tried Cowboy? If I have, I don't remember it, but according to this from an article at AmazingRibs, maybe I'll try a bag.

    "Harry Soo of Slap Yo Daddy BBQ, one of the top 10 competition teams year in and year out once told me "I buy whatever is on sale." Mike Wozniak of Quau, the 2010 Kansas City Barbeque Society Team of the Year and winner of scores of championships told me "Charcoal is for heat, not flavor. Wood is for flavor. I cook on whatever brand the competition sponsor is giving away for free.""

    They've been around for years. Somebody must be buying it - how bad can it BE?! =)

    I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

    Yes... that was the reason for the call! :)

    When I asked about OO... the next reply was, "Who is this?"... They do NOT make OO anymore and the last few bags went to a local shop for sale.  No pallets available, no lump.. :(

    Ha, I just read the whiz 2013 review. not pretty. =) Lots of uncarbonized wood, tons of ash, short burn time, smokey. 'course, that was 5 years ago.

    Will still try a bag.

    it used to be mill flooring scrap which threw folks off to it, it was really a clean burning lump. they had a hard time adjusting to regular lump with pieces not being fully carbonized. now it burns well enough, maybe a few more minutes to burn clean at start up.  2013 there were logs in the bag, still had bark on them =)

    @The Cen-Tex Smoker Yes they are large as the Lazzari is primarily "Restaurant Grade". Suited for the large open pits at some Steak Houses around here. I just bust up the big stuff with a chipping hammer! It is hard to light but the weed burner makes short work of it.

    The Kroger house brand Simple Truth is good stuff, especially if you catch it on sale. If not it's around a $1.00 a lb like most all the others.
