Just out of curiosity do any of you have a secret family recipe that you do not share?

I have one. I have not decided yet if I will or not. It has been passed down for 3 or 4 generations in my family.

Of course, even my family doesn't know one key ingredient in my turkey meatloaf. There is a copy of my recipes where they can find it after I check out.

I wouldn't say it's a secret, more no one has asked for it because then they might have to make it instead of me.

My great grandmother on my dads side had a lot of passed down through the generations Swedish receipes that my mom wanted. For whatever reason she didn't want to give them to my mom, (maybe she wanted to be the one to make them for my Dad). Well, she died, now they're gone.  If you have them pass them down is my advice.

  • Yes we did.  Asked SIL if ok to give out grandma's Buttermilk Pie recipe,  she didn't mind and we have cooked it at fests and posted it on the forum.

My mom freezes fresh corn and then microwaves it months later in cling wrap.  I'll never tell how long.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER

A classic sign of deep emotional insecurity.   I'd seek help immediately.

My mom has no secrets but the ingredients usually go something like "add enough flour until it looks right, then mix until it looks good" and so on. I did manage to get a couple pictures of some recipes in her recipe book over the holidays.

She is 85 and always gave instructions like that. Maybe that is how they did it back then?

I have one that my mom won't let me discuss. It's a dessert.
  • I wish I had my grandfather's sausage recipe!  He always said he'd write it down when he perfected it; but he kept changing a little here and a little there.  Nothing like being a taste tester as a kid.  We had fresh hogs on his farm, chickens as well.  The work was hard, taught me a lot, made me respect others and not thing of them as "just a .....".

Now grandma is another story....  She was a cook in the military.  She could make shoe leather taste good!  Its just very hard to read her handwriting!!!

Really!?  The one for the frosted isis?  And you can't tell the professional chefs or anyone because then it won't be effective?

It's one that only I know, that is for sure.  A trusted source tells me that it's better than anyone else's.

Never understood folks keeping recipes secret.....unless it was a matter of livelihood. Silly IMO.

I guess I will qualify , IMHO, even if I give you my " how I do it" ...unless you are like most here who's could pull,it off....the non regular cook couldn't and my mutilate my recipe ...and they say " well. It was Larry's recipe "...that is my only hesitation...it give to qualified individuals

It's not completely out of the question that I would try to market the sausage. Otherwise, I tend to agree with you.

Here's a little secret divulged - pretty much everything can be reverse engineered.  And much already has.

    http://recipegoldmine.com/classyclones/classyclones.html

A large part of cooking exceptional food is the quality of the ingredients and the techniques in preparing it.  The quantity and identity of what's in a dish can be figured out in a lab.

Out of true appreciation for all who peruse the forum I am continuing to take a hard stand and not releasing my personally cultivated over the years, "How to truly pi$$ off SWMBO" recipe.  I seem to have developed a natural liking for this and will definitely being paying for it from this day forward.
And yes, I read all the OT marital bliss threads.  My bliss meter is currently wrapped around the low peg.  And so it goes-FWIW-
