I hate to see such an important thread sunk by the moderators. I understand that this is a BBQ related forum but this thread is powerful and may give courage to our egging community to stand up and be vocal with the ones they love in order to save a life.

Mr. Buffalo @EGGzilla_jr please give this important thread a new lease on life.

Any action from the presidential candidates regarding their understanding of the Heroin problem? I am sure it would be just talking heads to get a vote, but, I am curious if any had mentioned it in their speeches?

There was a recent dateline show on heroin in the US.  It was heartbreaking to say the least.  The power of heroin addiction and withdrawals seen is mind blowing.....and it isn't my first rodeo in this arena.  They were teaching school kids how to administer the nasal narcan.  Syringes on playgrounds.  A dad coding his own 22 yr old son. It is real, and so sad.  All it takes is one snort, injection

Nothing from the candidates, that I know of, but your president just came to Atlanta earlier this week to drop a few pearls of wisdom at a drug conference in relation to all the current overdoses.

Late to the party but an ex-opiates user. Brothers got me off the **** in 82. Fast forward 23 years and I need back surgery. Got some good scrips. A day in I realized this ain't gonna work and wife gets me new ones. Not effective but its what I can do. ANYONE can get hooked. Nowadays its older folks who are on, but its a real problem. I'm back to being clean. And now realize I gotta watch scrips. My life's an open book. I have no issue talking about my past problems if it helps someone else.

More and more people die from drug overdoses annually and a surprising number of these deaths are caused by prescription drugs.
That's right. Prescription drugs are far more deadly to Americans than street drugs. Prescription drug abuse and addiction kill far more people in the U.S. every year than all illegal drugs combined.

I'm not trying to minimize the danger of choosing heroine over oxy, mostly because buying illicit drugs comes with an inherent danger of not knowing the purity, so it's impossible to determine a safe dose. Doctors become enabling pushers in a for profit health "care" market. If you take away a source of "medication" every addict will seek a different source.

To put it in terms all of us might understand: If BGE went out of business, and your egg was stolen, would you buy a KJ or a Primo or would you go back to a charcoal Webber?
It's not even a choice to have NO backyard bbq grill, right? Take away our "grill" of choice, and each of us would feed our "addiction" by alternate means.

What if I asked you all to give up meat altogether? There is no "safe" amount of meat that you can ingest, ever, for the rest of your life. No matter where you cook it, your body is incapable of metabolizing the smallest amount of meat, because one bite will lead to a freezer full overnight. That's an inkling of how sobriety feels to an addict.

Addiction is cunning, powerful, and baffling; your head literally tells you: "it's ok to try just a little, you won't get hooked again".

I'm not going to get into my whole personal road to sobriety, I'm just trying to point out that you can't "tough love" someone into sobriety. There has to be a bottom, and there has to be a strong personal commitment to yourself and to your treatment program. I don't know if anyone can will power themselves out of an addiction. I know it's easy to say: "Just Give That Shjt Up".

Easy to say, very difficult to do.

Just an update. I went to ANOTHER heroin/pain pill overdose at 5 a.m. this morning, 4/2! This time he was still barley alive and we gave him narcan IM in his arm. This guy woke up, became fully alert, and proceeded to lie to us about what drugs he had did. He said alcohol only. Just so everyone here knows, narcan only reverses opioids, not alcohol or Xanax. He just didn't seem to care how close he really was to death.
