For 35 years or so now, I've considered Dire Straits' Telegraph Road to be the best Rock record ever made, and I still stand by that.
Just ran across this live version tonight that I hadn't seen before.  Mark's vocals weren't perfect (he's slowed a lot since his motorcycle accident) but the playing is still killer, when he straps on that gorgeous Strat Paul Reed Smith, in quilted maple, and finishes the buildup/climax of the song.  So, so killer.

David Byrne, of Talking Heads, was on SNL this past weekend, and the video is exploding.  What a mad, eccentric genius.  And no shoes.

Had them on 8-track when I was thirteen, use to go to sleep with headphones and let it play. Then wake up and sneak out.

I have seen most of my guitar hero’s, but this is the one that has avoided me.  Dire Straits is the one band I so miss not getting to see.  Live Alchemy is the greatest live album of all time in my book.  Tunnel of Love is amazing.

  • @Botch: You just gave me something new to listen to at the gym this morning. I could be wrong, but me thinks the guitar Knopfler is playing in the clip you shared is a custom Pensa. Whatever it is, he makes it sing.

I never got to see Dire Straits, but did see Mark at Abravenel Hall, tenth row center stage, and he ended the show with Telegraph Road.  Dayam.

The Radio Stations we volunteer for is doing a survey. The winner gets VIP back stage, for the Stones. The question is: What are the top 5 albums that define the 80's?

     1) The Clash "London Calling"

     2) Prince "Purple Rain"

    3) U2 "Joshua Tree"

     4) Talking Heads "Stop Making Sense"

     5) Bruce Springsteen "Born in the USA"

We can't compete. But you can. What say you?
