Recovering from yesterday's one-of-the-top-five-trips from hell.  Came down from the UP, through Wisconsin, and on in to Illinois.  What started out as normal, snow covered roads in the UP soon deteriorated into a mess.  The snow plows were out in Norther Wisconsin, but couldn't keep up.  Then at about the center of Wisconsin the piled up snow turned to slush ... you know the kind where you get into the groves and stay there even if you don't want to.  Then Northern Illinois added a foul twist ... icy rain.  30 mph on the expressway and still folks were spinning out into the median.

Oh yes, just to add to the stress, my alert system called me to say power was out at home ... yep, the entire city of Washington was out of power compliments of the ice storm.

On a positive note, we finely made it, safely, as did the rest of our traveling family members.  The house was still standing.  Power was restored to our subdivision after eight hours.  With what has been happening in the rest of the states, we fall into the lucky column.

Anybody in the local area need some wild cherry smoke wood?  Those were the only two trees of mine that didn't make it.

@ Jeepster - Glad you survived the road trip.  Always a white-knuckle drive in those conditions.  Ice is non-judgemental, as many wheel drive as you want, it doesn't care.   And too bad about the cherry trees but a great smoke wood right there.

@lousubcap ... yep, 4wd or 2wd, they all stop the same.  Sure miss the studded tires when the road turns to ice.

The cherry trees will flavor quite a number of cooks, so that will work out great.  Already have three eggers who will take some ...

Watching the wife prep for our Puerto Rican New Year's Eve dinner. She made flan and rice pudding yesterday today she is making rice 3 ways. Right now she has the sofrito (SP) boiling and the little sausages browning about to put the rice in. The house smells amazing. I get to do a picnic shoulder tomorrow with garlic and Sazon rubbed/injected.

I snapped 4 screw heads off on two orifice holders on a stove I picked up 2nd hand. Ugh. Fricken cheap hardware! $120 - $180 for two new orifices or two hours worth of drilling and tapping to replace with a bigger size screw. Which will probably make me resize the preexisting holes on the stove top. Fun times ahead.

Oh, forgot - gotta find a decent/cheap used car.  My daughter's transmission just crapped the bed and she has to head back to school on Sunday.  This on top of putting a new engine in my son's car.  Expensive December.
    Love you bro!
