How long have you had your EGG? (with no issues...ie crack...etc)

Just curious, Im looking to buy my 2nd Egg, preferably a used one to save money, I know they don't come with a transferrable warranty so Im cautious to buy it used...but I found a good deal on a used one, LG BGE $400...
So assuming when I go to see it, its in good shape, is this a good investment?

I would guess, Scruffee81, that a lot depends on how you Egg.
If you're inclined to do a lot of hot-boxing, as in Pizza and other high-heat efforts, you might wanna stick to warrantied Eggs.
That is speculation only. It's just how I would look at it if I was considering what you're considering.
Good luck.

I have no idea what ceramic parts cost, but they'r not cheap. My large is a bit more than 5 years old. The base and firebox have been cracked for at least 2 years. One of these days, I'll get new ones. For me, my second egg was a mini. Listened to all the kook-aid drinks on here and just HAD to have another egg. No way I would make that mistake again.
I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Mini base cracked under 2 years. Fire bowl now has a crack.
Large egg no issues just about 2 years.
Btw I'd buy used if the deal is that good. I uses my mini cracked for another 1yr or so, and it ws cracked through with no issues.Seattle, WA -
@Carolina_Q are you saying you regret getting a 2nd EGG....and why?
-
2 years on an egg that never got over 750 for a quick sear, actually cracked at 325 on a tday turkey cook. another 5 on an egg that cracked that saw temps of 1200 frequently. 10 on my camp egg so far without cracks. 8 years on a small that delaminated from winter freezing and thawing, not from cooking. this was the one from water damage, ive never seen this on another egg

That's exactly what I'm saying. My large is just fine. In fact, I have yet to light both eggs at the same time. Not once in the 4 or so years I've owned two eggs. And I almost never use the mini. Back in the pre-egg days when we entertained a lot, we never owned more than one grill at a time. Ever. Neither did any of our friends. One was plenty for all of us. For me, it still is.I should have known better, but my large was only a year old and the bloom was still on the rose. I listened to the hype. My bad.Just think about how you cook, that's all I'm saying. Would the oven or stovetop do the job for that side dish or loaf of bread? As if it hasn't for all these ears. Why do you need/want a second egg? If you have a good answer, great. Do it.I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

@Carolina Q you reveal an excellent point. I have a 2 yr old Large and now a Max. I've cooked on both at the same time numerous times. Did I need the Max? Probably not. This is something I enjoy and spend a lot of time doing it. No regrets having 2. However, I don't believe I'd every buy a non warranty egg. My reasoning »»»simple fact that at some point it has a possibility of cracking etc and the cost to repair will easily offset that savings of buying it used to begin with. Are you familiar with @Carolina Q ....scruffee81 said:@Carolina_Q are you saying you regret getting a 2nd EGG....and why?
Btw @Carolina Q if I have stuff that I don't use that has value I usually part ways with it and get what I.can $ wise.
If the mini was such a bad.idea craigs it and get $200...seems easy enough.
I'm frugal in some ways like your posts come across but from your previous posts you really regret your mini, easy fix awaits.Seattle, WA -

I've had my first egg for 9 years. It's had a cracked base, 2 cracked fire boxes and a cracked ring. The only original part left is the dome. 2nd one is a year old...no problems yet. I would never buy used unless it was crazy cheap. The warranty is built in to the price. I paid $750 for my new egg with nest and platesetter at Salado. I think a new base is $250 or more and I guarantee you are going to crack a box and/or ring. They work fine with cracks so I wouldn't be as worried about them. My first box is in 3 pcs with the warranty replacement sitting the garage for 2 years.Keepin' It Weird in The ATX FBTX

I have a Large that's 13 years old. The fire box cracked about 11 years ago, and the replacement from BGE is still in the garage in the box it was delivered in. I don't know if I even opened it.My Small is 10 years old, the the cracked firebox is still in it. Same thing with the replacement box in the garage. The pieces stick together from the grease, I guess. Sometimes the innards lift right out like one piece (VERY carefully, of course).Mini innards have never cracked. Not that I ever look.Judy in San Diego

I had my large for... 2-3 years, and noticed a crack in the fire box. Got it replaced about 4-5 months ago.. it's still in the box, strapped up in my garage. Haven't felt the need to change it until it completely falls apart. Haven't checked for any cracks on the large, but looks to be going okay. I have a mis aligned dome, I think with a **** hinge, but it's past the hinge replacement and I'm sure they will tell me to pound sand anyways. My minimax is less than a week old, so..no issues yet, much better hinge, the lid opens with more umphff too.-FATC1TY

I've had my Large since 1997 and the firebox cracked once. No other problems in 17 years.

So, after hearing all these comments on cracked ceramics it is not very encouraging for a guy who has only had his XL since June with no issues. Has anyone ever done an analysis to determine the root cause of these cracks? I was just about to move my egg but now have decided not to because of the potential to crack!

@H12mike - Do you have a warranty? If so, I wouldnt hesitate to move the egg. Your egg is ceramic and is fired in a kiln like pottery. They are susceptible to cracks.mishandling usually isnt the culprit as many owners, like my self, dont move my egg too often. You may be like danny above and never have problems. I personally have only had to replace a cracked fire grate; which was a smooth experience.XL BGEJoe JRBaltimore, MD

If you want a cooker that will not crack ever, but might rust, buy a metal cooker.
If you want a cooker you can use in any weather, with any style of cooking, very efficient fuel usage, and a warranty to take care of occasional cracks, buy an Egg.They/Them

I do have a warranty...but I will be discussing this with a friend who has a large kiln to get his input. I am ordering a nest handler after the holidays so I can safely move the egg if need be. After being in the medical device manufacturing industry for over 20 years, it is tough to accept any failures of more than one in a million. I guess I just need to "chuck" that mindset.

@H12mike - Chuck it man and get to egging. The last thing I worry about is my egg cracking. It is good to know that you are covered under warranty though. If you do a search I'm sure you will find several cracked egg success stories.XL BGEJoe JRBaltimore, MD

I had mine a year before platesetter cracked and 2 years before the base began to flake, both were replaced with no issues. I would only do a used egg if I had the same size and model that had a warranty.
I'd do an eggfest egg before I did a used. -
@H12mike coming from another type of manufacturing, one that also deals in ceramics. No lives depend on our manufacturing techniques, sometimes it's cheaper to accept and make right a failure. If we tried to live up to 1 in a million, we'd be out of business.
