Decided to fry up some beer battered halibut and cheese curds today to go with my homemade tartar sauce. All went well until the last batch of cheese curds. Most of you are gonna be like, duh! You guessed it, I started a grease fire. Sorry no pics of the fire, you'll just have to take my word for it. One good thing is, it's a lot easier to put out a grease fire on the egg compared to a gasser or on the stove in the Kitchen. Just reached up, shut the egg, put the ceramic top on and closed the bottom vent.

My wife said, "now what?" I said we're done. Can't reopen the lid until it's extinguished. We came inside and enjoyed some fish and cheese.

Although the food was great, this was the first and last time I'll do a fish fry on the egg.

Just white cheddar curds that were dipped in beer batter. Tasted pretty awesome. What I had of them.

Great looking meal. Glad no one was hurt and you had the sense to snuff it, I'd probably still be running.
The egg is a great grill and smoker, but I could never understand those that want to deep fry or stir fry on it. My Dad used to always tell me "Boy, you can use a shovel to drive a nail, a hammer works better". Right tool for the right job, propane burner or electric deep fryer is the right tool for frying, IMO.

@Eggcelsior‌ , how will a wok reduce the chance of a grease fire?

Don't think it will. Using a wok as a stir fry pan works relatively safely on the egg as there is little oil. The problem of a grease fire increases when you add more oil to deep fry. You have the pan, wok or dutch oven, down in the egg  on a grid probably sitting on the fire ring or on a spider. The temp control, or lack thereof is fine for wok, not so good for deep frying.

I fry in mine all the time. What caused the fire? Your grease did not look to high.

Once had a grease fire from cooking bacon on the Egg. While removing the pan, tilted it and set off a grease fire not only inside the Egg, but also in the pan I was holding. Fortunately I was wearing Ove Gloves, and was able to put the flaming pan down, cover it and put out the fire. Closed the Egg and that fire went out as well. Got lucky with no burns. I'm much more careful when dealing with grease on the Egg. My deep frying will be limited to the turkey fryer burner.

Actually, I searched the forum to see if anyone was using the egg to fry and ran across one of your old posts @mickey. I seen your pics and thought cool, I can do it. I think your post said something similar to "I fry in mine all of the time".

Anyway, the fire got started when the cheese curds stuck in the bottom of the pan. I used a spatula to free them up and oil spilled over the side. Whoosh, instant fire. It really was easy to contain. I probably would of panicked had it happen in the house. And it's funny because I rehearsed in my head what would I do if a fire happened. So as soon as it caught fire, I closed the lid and knew I was done.

I'm just glad it happened on the last batch.

Thanks for the advice @Skiddymarker‌ . I'll have to look at a wok and see if it's something I'd use often enough to justify the cost.

Operator Error :-B ..... That would have happened with a wok as well. The vessel you used was fine and I would sure use it. Just next time have a pair of good gloves to remove pan from Egg before splashing around in it. As I said, I use it to fry in outside. So much better than kitchen. Get one of these wire deals. Plus your way you can shut the lid. I am going to start using a pot so I can as well. image

You can get a wok that has a larger diameter than the egg. That way, any grease splatter falls outside the egg. Otherwise, the wok's sloped sides provide better protection than a skillet because the oil is much farther from the edge.
