Royal Oak

After sending my wife to the store to get some lump she came back with some Royal Oak. I was terribly disappointed after reading several posts on here about how awful it was. Well I was pleasantly surprised. The bag that I got was full of big pieces and had less crumbles that the previous bag of BGE that I had. I'm not sure where all the hate comes from? What? You have to spend a damn fortune on charcoal in order for it to be good?

Bought a bag recently and cooked BB Ribs. I was surprised at how much lump burned and amount of ash.

Charcoal is semi-burned wood. People love their brands. They're like subtley different religions, people go to war over it.

I have no complaints with Royal Oak. Latest bags have large pieces and minimal chips. Easy light, hot, clean flavor. Nothing not to like!XLBGE, Small BGE, Homebrew and GuitarsRochester, NY

It last pretty long for me. I've never had an issue with it burning to fast. I'll keep using it for now. It's the best I can get around here. I'd love to try Rockwood sometime but as for now I can't get it anywhere. The vocs suck on RO though I'll admit that.GASGUY said:Bought a bag recently and cooked BB Ribs. I have used 3 types since I got my egg 4 months ago, BGE, Cowboy and RO. For the money difference I can't justify the cost of BGE when Menards runs RO for $4.99 an 8.8 pound bag. It burns plenty hot, small amount of ash, starts well and I did an 18 hour burn from one (very full) fire ring on a large brisket and it was just fine! I do like the way BGE burns, but not so well I want to spend $25 per bag…RO on sale, 5 bags= 44 pounds, $24.95. BGE, 1 bag= 20 pounds, $24.99. Up to you, I am not willing to fight over it! Good luck!LBGE

Wasn't looking for a fight. Just wanted other opinions. I have only used BGE and RO. I am even willing to say the RO was the superior lump. maybe I just got a really good bag of RO and a really crappy bag of BGE but for now and for cost efficiency I'm sticking with ROLBGE, Paris, KY.

@henapple RO is far superior than that BGE crap. BGE lump doesn't even come close! It's not even in the same ballpark. :-\"NW IOWA

My only complaint is the rocks I find when clearing the ash sometimes. Other than that I think Royal Oak is good fuel thats readily available at the right price!LBGE, MiniMax, Weber Genesis and a hunger for all grilling knowledge! Aledo, TX

I have had a bag of Rockwood before that had a lot of small pieces. I have had bags of Royal Oak with a lot of small pieces. But overall, Royal Oak is very good. I think there is a bag or two of small lump in every pallet.

It's the same wood as BGE brand, so I doubt it was easier to light unless your BGE stuff wasn't completely dry. RO makes BGE branded lump.-FATC1TY

I don't buy BGE, or that smokey RO junk. I go for quality, and can afford it. But thanks for the insult.-FATC1TY

@FATC!TY. Wasn't and insult man. Wasn't directed toward you. I was saying in general that if you are paying big bucks for a different color bag with the same stuff in it then yeah, your intelligence lacks a lot to be desired. Not directed at you. I don't care what you cook with or how much you pay for it. Completely up to you. I was just trying to figure out why I have heard so much complaints on herea about Royal Oak. I like it.LBGE, Paris, KY.
