I use a lot of the Ryes in my old fashioneds. For whatever reason I really enjoy a rye old fashioned. Hits the spot for me.
Agree 100% on rye (or high-rye blends) in an old-fashioned!  Here's one of my favorites for an old-fashioned (and I see this asked for a lot for old fashioneds here in Louisville KY):

Liquor store guy tried to get me to buy a bottle of 15yo Remus today for $250.   I wasn’t familiar with it but came in a black box.   I wanted to run a make on it before paying $250.   Anyone have any insight?
I’ve heard it’s very good but maybe not 250 good. My take is if 250 isn’t a huge amount of money for you it may be a buy. If that’s a huge amount then there are better values out there. It’s a very handsome bottle and it’s very aged for bourbon. I’ve heard it’s not overly oaky. I don’t mind oaky but some don’t care for it. If oak forward is offensive to you then this may be the aged bottle for you. It is highly allocated/rare. May be a buy once sorta deal but not twice. The whiskey is good for sure.
Thanks for this!    $250 for bourbon is not really my thing but would do it if I heard “amazing” or something along those lines.

I’ll gladly pass—thanks for the analysis!!

I'm a basic beer kind of guy. I don't mind a good local IPA or stout. I like my cheap local Grain Belt beer. To sit and drink something on the rocks isn't necessarily my thing. I was gifted these a few weeks back from my buddies and I was told that these can't become whiskey Cokes. I guess I'll have to sip on these for awhile and try to figure something out..
Very nice gift. You must be a great friend to some guys for sure. Not your dads Jack, much better. Hope you enjoy. If you aren’t a whiskey drinker, the gold labeled barrel proof will likely need to be over some melted ice or in a cocktail.  😁

    Enjoy!

I've been fortunate to know those knuckleheads since about 8th grade. I couldn't ask for a better group of friends. They ended up grabbing these bottles as my buddy had intentions of getting me a bottle that was pushing the $300/mark but decided last minute thinking it might not be the best idea. I'm glad he didn't. That would have stayed sealed as I would feel too guilty to drink something that nice.

I appreciate the tips above. That definitely helps out! Much appreciated! @pgprescott

Going to be doing some blind tastings over Christmas break with my BIL. So I figured I better open some of the unopened ones and let them breathe before the showdowns, at least that’s what I’m telling myself.

That is a great find. I would give serious thought to offering that up in a blind tasting as it is extremely hard to sight much less buy around here.  But like any bourbon (or other beverage) it is all in the taster,  Enjoy!

Rittenhouse is actually the first Rye that started me down the Rye path. Years ago I was in Pennsylvania for a work trip and a few local bars used Rittenhouse as their “house whisky” for their old fashioned. Rittenhouse is a storied Pennsylvania style Rye whose heritage commentates Philadelphia’s famous Rittenhouse Square (so it says on their bottle).
It is very reasonably priced and has a special place in my heart and on my shelf.

It’s interesting to see how the allocated and hard to find bottles compare against more accessible bottles in a blind. Have you thought what others you would include in the blind?

As you well know, the full proof will be an obvious outlier but that is a great lineup.  Looking forward to the remaining two sessions.

i can’t speak to Kwanzaa but it’s a pet peeve of mine when it comes to Christmas.    There is a specific reason why it is called that and the letter X is not involved.

Wife and I both caught the flu. Coupled with her asthma acting up and the same time, she is currently a resident of the local hospital.

We both had our flu shots so hopefully it won’t be too bad, but I currently feel like refried sh!t.

Day three is pretty interesting as well.

May I suggest a day 3.5 or 4 where you take the winners from the 3 previous blinds and let them do battle?

    Enjoy!
