    A few photos of Rome:

ehhh, it’s okay I guess.  Really prefer more gold leaf.  A real leader would have had more gold leaf.

I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.

Hi, I'm Botch, and I have a wasp problem.
My '09 Tacoma is Monaco for paper wasps.  They build nests behind my outside mirrors, behind the gas cap, in the engine compartment, on the spare tire, and now in the passenger doorframe.  Today when I got to the market, I opened the passenger-side door and finally found the nest.  There was just one wasp on it, and I assumed it was the queen, that they stay on the nest and don't have a stinger, like honeybees.  I grabbed a length of tool-kit standard-issue coat hanger wire, and knocked the nest away, but instead of hitting the ground the damn thing bounced into the footwell, Gah!  I finally knocked it out onto the ground, and by then the assumed queen was getting in my face, not happy.  I resisted swatting and scooted over to the driver's side door, and got in without issue.
I parked on the street to carry in my groceries; wasps won't recognize my truck from even 10' away but their internal GPS is dead-accurate, and there were about four worker wasps buzzing angrily right where I usually park in the driveway, I know they will get even more mad when they see their nest missing!

Regarding wasp traps.  The big box stores sell a couple different types; I had an older one that attracted wasps into it with a chemical scent, but they couldn't get back out.  It killed wasps by the hundreds but it sure seemed the hive kept pooping out babies to keep up:

And make sure you buy the type for wasps; a yellowjacket trap uses a different scent and doesn't work at all (on wasps).

Last summer I bought a different style, it was sticky like a fly trap but had this cool, hexagonal optical pattern that was supposed to attract wasps visually; don't waste your money.  Mine caught exactly three over the whole summer.  I did a Ewetube search and one guy suggested a tsp of boric acid dissolved in a bottle of apple juice, poured into a pan.  Add a few sticks so the wasps can drink without falling in (and keep away from pets/kids), and they take the acid back to the hive and kill everyone.  Ordered a bottle from amazoid for $10, will let you know if it works.

The average life expectancy of a (russian) soldier on the (Ukranian) front line during an assault is 20-35 minutes.

A bit of fishing. Walleye, Brook, and Lake Trout all in the same lake. 39" on the laker, multiple 20"+ brookies and a 27" walleye. Not pictured are the Pike and smaller walleyes caught. Need a bigger cutting board for next time.

Thanks, the water was 37 degrees in the open still with a bit of ice on some of the shore lines. I think we timed it perfect as all the fish were tight to the shore in the shallows and easier to target.

beautiful place to fish. Took last week off with friends but for salmon. The water was too cold for the thermacline to set up yet. Maybe two weeks too early

Ya, this year seems to be way behind so far, but things are warming up quickly now. I'm headed to northern Manitoba next week for a fly-in trip. Apparently the ice is just going out now. The first few groups have had their trips cancelled on them. On the bright side, the bugs should still be dormant.

Hold tight lads, the barren expanse of time devoid of meaning and mainly football will end soon.

You may have heard the World Cup, a tournament accurately employing the word ‘World’ because of the international nature to the participants - unlike some other events… is coming to your town. And a few others in the Spanish and French speaking parts of America.

I am confident that you’re all over the detail already so shall not patronise you, but I will warn you that the game does involve: an actual ball shaped ball, use of the body part usually engaged in stopping your leg fraying, i.e the foot, and zero dressing as a space man.

Similarly, the whole event is a designated charity - except in spirit because a) no-one will be permitted to avail themselves of reusable water bottles at the matches, and b) towards other charities : see here; https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7309474/2026/05/27/world-cup-fifa-ticket-charity-raffle/   In summary, the millions harvested from spectators have been invested in lawyers issuing cease and desist to a spinal injury charity that had the temerity to raffle two tickets to an obscure group match.

    Your options;

    1. totally invest in the whole thing, learn all 1,248 players’ bios https://www.theguardian.com/football/ng-interactive/2026/jun/04/world-cup-2026-complete-player-guide, get an ever changing tattoo of the results, and drink beer
    2. pay passing interest, acknowledge the brief sparks of intrigue and drink beer
    3. ignore it and drink beer.

Naturally, as an avowed soccerista I shall do all three.

Other girls may try to take me away
But you know, it's by your side I will stay

Safe to say that when it comes to this particular sport, you are what we Americans refer to as being “balls deep” !

Yes, oddly enough, my wife loves breweries but hates beer. We are leaving for a trip to SoCal tomorrow and we plan on stopping by several breweries while we are there.

Welcome to Italy @JohnInCarolina! I will also be in Tuscany in the next few days. It's going to be very busy as July the 2nd is a national holiday.
    Enjoy your stay
Are we coming up on July?  Did I miss a month somehow?  😜
Time flies in Tuscany!  We spent 10 days there and it went by very quickly.
It’s a charming area, although all the signs reading “Yanks go home” have been interesting.  I didn’t know so many people hate the Yankees as much as I do!
Maybe it’s about pope Leo go home =)

He’s quite popular with the locals by all accounts.

Hell of a vacation tied to a conference.  Way to maximize "the window of opportunity."
Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood.  Life is too short for light/lite beer!  Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint.
