The lack of any big announcement—such as definitive US opposition to Taiwan’s independence, or the curtailing of US weapons sales to the island—will come as a big relief to Taiwanese leaders, Brian Hioe writes for The Diplomat.   
 
Trump and Xi will likely meet again this year. As Minxin Pei argued in a Nikkei Asia op-ed, that could be a good thing. With meetings on the calendar, both the US and China have short-term reasons to keep tensions low. Over the medium and long term, that might foster an environment in which the two superpowers can craft meaningful agreements.
 
But with little to show for this week’s splashy summit, Trump might try to get more out of the next encounter, writes Nikkei Asia Editor-in-Chief Akito Tanaka. The talks, “which were expected to have significant global implications, appear to have ended in ambiguity,” Tanaka writes. By warning that Taiwan-related issues must be handled carefully to avoid a superpower clash, Xi seems to have “delivered the headline-making message” of the meetings, Tanaka suggests. “Having said he will host Xi in the U.S. ahead of the country's midterm elections, Trump will likely seek to claim more tangible outcomes when the second round of the summit is on his home turf.”"
