Odd concert between Elton John and Brandy Carlisle on CBS right now. It didn't sound very good the first half, I left it on while I surfed elsewhere. Then, Elton did a solo piece of Tiny Dancer, the rest of the band took a break and listened, and... Magic. His vocals have aged, but dayam his piano playing has only advanced, damn near fawnky!
Then Brandy did one of her songs, strictly solo on acoustic, and more Magic! This is about the 2/3rds way thru the show, so hopefully it gets better now. Chad whatsizname from the RHCP is on drums, don't recognize the others (I'm sure I'd know their names).
I pretty much learned rock piano, for what its worth, from Elton. Had two books of Elton songs and I could read the guitar chords (Am, C, Bbm7, etc) but the fly **** on the staffs I had to count out to figure out the notes, could use my ear for those notes instead.
Finally, quiz question: who's retired more times from their main profession: Elton, Michael Jordan, or Prince? 75 completely-worthless BotchPoints™ riding on this one, folks!“All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence, and then success is sure.”

Cory Wong (the fantastic rhythm guitarist from the Vulfpeck consortium) put together this ensemble; don't know who they are or where they're playing, but they smoke!! Those horn lines are so tangled, yet so tight!!

Matt Johnson is the keyboardist for one of my favorite Brit-funk bands, Jamiroquoi. During the Pandemic he started doing a lot of ewetubes from home, demos of certain instruments, funk techniques, mixing tricks, etc and I really enjoyed watching them. Think he's "working" a lot more now so he doesn't publish much, but he dropped this 2-minute nugget of funk today, playing along with Dua Lipa (I'm not familiar with her stuff, so don't know if he's playing along with the record, or just a vox track, or what).

The Fearless Flyers (yet another offshoot of the Vulfpeck gang); all three axe-men appear to have their instruments mounted to mic stands... odd. But smokin' as usual!

I love Hiromi! I haven't seen/heard this clip before, Canon in D (by whom I don't know) She throws a metal ruler into the piano for effects, and (from the comments at least) this was an improvised piece for which someone else transcribed, which is fun to follow along with.
And it was uber-amazing the way she added a half-beat to stay in time with the audience, obviously a bunch of white people
. Saw a video of, damn can't remember his name right now, where the audience started clapping along on 1 and 3, he got the rest of the band to drop out for 8 bars or so, and added an extra beat to get the audience on 2 and 4, and you could see the band members crack up! “All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence, and then success is sure.”

I've been listening to the Blues radio station that Apple music hosts. Have been finding it pretty good! Heard this one on there recently and suspect a few of you know it:

Pomplamoose has a new CD coming out this summer, they just dropped the first single:

I don't speak the language, but I could listen to her purr in French all day. Jack Conte on synth is her husband and co-bandleader (he's also the founder/CEO of Patreon), and that's Larry Goldings on the Hammond!“All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence, and then success is sure.”

^^^ Wow, I just noticed the condition of her expensive Neumann mic. My 47-yr-old SM-58 is in MUCH better shape than that, and I played dives for decades. WTF?

I don't know how this kid does it, but Jacob Collier just performed a live version of his remake of "Bridge over Troubled Water", with Tori Kelly and John Legend, and it KILLS.

I've seen this before, maybe twice, but Rick Beato's review of Chicago's Make Me Smile is just amazing (and it's not one of my favorite Chicago tunes).
My very first bar band was a Chicago/EW&F/Doobies cover band, in '78. I played trombone, and a single conga with a drumstick during the non-brass tunes. I attempted to write out the brass charts on my Mom's piano for the band; I learned a lot but a lot flew over my head too. We didn't do this particular song, but now with a few decades' experience under my belt, I can hear the great sus- chords that Pankow used, and have a greater appreciation for the brass chart, chord patterns, bass line, and even the drumming on this tune. Just killer! And I know of no one else nowadays who makes music like this other than Silk Sonic, and ToP. Enjoy!

Jellyfish, live in the studio. No autotune, no overdubs, no click track, all acoustic instruments; just four musicians who knew what the f*ck they were doing. Damn this is beautiful.

An interesting afternoon. I saw this "demo" of the new Nord Organ 3 (I have the Nord Lead I and Nord Electro II, which has fantastic B-3 emulations), by a collection of monsters led by an organist named Kevin Powell, whom I've not heard of:
https://youtu.be/2DKedoGQqME?si=Z40Y5bdRRdOgmTsY
I haven't heard this much in-the-pocket funk in a long time; DAYAM! After watching the EweTube, I added Kevin Powell to my Tidal list, and played his latest album (live in a NYC club). I heard a LOT more of his gospel influences, and yet no organ! Granted, there could be are probably a lot of "Kevin Powell"s in the world. But only one showed up in Tidal.
I played it while I was pickling some onions and doing dishes, and then an incredible preach/tune from him, about his Momma pushing a shopping cart, that really hit hard.
So, two elevated experiences in one day, and I'm still not sure if they're both the same guy. Wow.
EDIT: Good grief. After watching that video again, ewetube served up a few more demos; Where are these monsters coming from?!?

Between 2016 and 2018 Chick and his bandmates got back together and did some shows, and this live two-CD set was released right before his death.
And I didn't know a thing about it until yesterday! Been listening to it on Tidal several times since; beautifully recorded (the drums sound fantastic).

Always enjoyed the sound and the intense rhythms of the tabla, but this 3+hour collection had to be broken up into 4 or so sessions. Pretty interesting (and over my head) writeup in Wikipedia on how these are played and the rhythms used.Oooh, and a sing-along!

This may only be of interest to the musicians here, but a 13-minute interview with Chad Wackerman, about his 3-day-long audition with Frank Zappa and subsequent rehearsals. Damn, I thought college jazz band was tough!
