a Blast from the Past: Joe Jackson, "Steppin' Out"!
This showed up on my ewetube out of the blue, haven't heard this song in, really, decades. Taped it my last year of college, the whole album was impressive, a big rock album hit with no guitar at all!
In about 1985 or so, finances forced me to take on a roommate (another lieutenant), and we went to the local brick-n-mortar store so he could buy a damn TV (I was happily living without one); while at the store I noticed these newfangled CD players had dropped to $299, and I ended up buying one. So excited to hook it up, turn on the amp, and.... oh, I don't have any CDs! Quick trip back into town and I bought Yes's "90125" (90210?) (8675309?) and JJ's "Steppin' Out" (both beautifully-recorded albums).
Anyhoo, this concert much later included the band being driven by them new-fangled drum machine/sequencers, and true to form the drummer just doubled the Oberheim's snare. So good to hear this tune again.

Norah Jones has a live version of Black Hole Sun on her new album that merits a listen if you like her or Soundgarden.

Rick Beato was flying out to Nashville to interview a friend of his, set up a day-before interview with a bunch of session musicians, and instead they set up a full recording session for a local up-n-coming singer/songwriter duo, got a full studio/engineers/producer lined up, and that's what Rick eventually filmed. The SS duo sent three demos to Rick prior to the trip, and they all decided to pick the song once everyone was there.
The producer wrote out the charts while listening to the demo (which seemed really spendy to me), using the "Nashville chord system", which I despise. I was raised on jazz music, where C-F-G-Am was notated I-IV-V-VIm, while the nashville system would call that 1-2-3-4m (and I'm not quite sure if the 4m is correct). Each musician got a copy, and they retreated to different spots to work out their own parts.
I guess they ran thru it 4 times together live, then recorded it all in one take. Nice, lotsa fun, and this is how records are made (at least country records).
The instrumentation also struck me. The acoustic guitar player had a 50's Martin (understandable), the drummer was playing a mid-70's cheapo drumkit with a sparkle finish (a la Musicland in the mall!), bass player on a cheep Japanese copy of some famous bass, and the keyboardist on a Fender Rhodes, a design older than I am (and in better shape). I confess to being a fan of the newest tools, but the "newest tools" ain't what make the music.
Really a fun video for music fans.

First time I've seen this; Stephan, Django and the Hot Club of France. For those unfamiliar with him, Django was burned in an accident and could only play guitar with two of his fretting fingers; dayam.

Wish it'd been a band arrangement instead of a single keyboard/MIDI track, but they mix well!

The Man In The Brown Shorts™ should be bringing this CD to me tomorrow, but this track just came out on EweTube. It's been a long, long time since I've had tears running down my cheeks. Ho-Lee-Chit Batman!

There is another video on the 'tube, 2 hours long, where Jacob explains how the whole track came together, over years and yet mostly over 3 hours!!! This kid's a Monster!_____________Tin soldiers and Johnson's coming...

I don't really listen to the radio anymore, nor get any music magazines, so every once in awhile I'm made aware of a great band that had been under my radar for years. A few of these videos were posted on my audiophile forum this morning, and I'm digging The Lemon Twigs greatly! Very smart power-pop in the vein of Fountains of Wayne/Jellyfish, cool chord changes and spot-on harmonies. Just added a couple CDs to my acquire list.

A beautiful song that just doesn't get played enough; only Sir Paul could take one of the world's most hideous instruments, and make it SOAR!
