Pocket Knives For Big Green Egg Cooks

I love Starrett. I have a couple of these 6" rules from my days as an Engineer working in Tool and Die. I found the Starrett Combo Square set below at an Estate auction. Cast Iron and Stainless. I think I paid $20.Campbell2N said:
Big plus on that Starrett ruler! One of my favorite tools.Teefus said:I have a big cigar box full of pocket knives. They're mostly Swiss Army, Buck, Schrade, and Barlow. For years my EDC was a small Swiss Army, but I managed to lose it last week. It's probably in a seat cushion or in my car. In order to not feel naked I dipped into the knife box for an old favorite. It's a Gerber Silver Knight I've had since the mid 1980s. I like the slim profile and locking blade. You can carry it wearing dress pants and it doesn't telegraph in the least.

I picked this up for my Dad for Father's Day. A Civivi Elementum utility knife. A knife you can abuse and not worry about. Plus it's fidget friendly.

I hate when stuff goes missing. It causes me all sorts of anxiety. It isn’t about cost or anything either, it is just about the knowing.GrateEggspectations said:
Great ending right there. I can fully understand your relief, as it sounds like you and I are very much on the same page.WeberWho said:GrateEggspectations said:no matter the monetary value, bugs me to no end!!
I hate that feeling. I have a 250 piece toolbox that ended up getting tipped over in the garage last fall. I've had this toolbox for 10 plus years and somehow haven't lost a single piece. I found all of them but two sockets after being tipped over. The one socket I found within the first few days after it went missing. The other socket I couldn't find was an oddball 5.5 metric socket that I couldn't replace under the Kluth brand. Most common sockets you can buy separately through Klutch but not a 5.5 metric socket. So I bought some other brand 1/4 drive 5.5 mm socket. Which worked but it bugged me knowing it wasn't the original socket that came with the set. It wasn't even a week ago I had to grab a big socket from the toolbox and something fell to the floor when removing the socket from the tray. I looked down and saw a small socket laying on the floor. I couldn't believe my eyes. I think I may have even said, "No way" out loud. There it was. My 1/4 drive 5.5mm Kluth socket that has been missing for almost a year! I was sure happy to throw that mismatched 5.5mm socket into my spare socket box!Earlier this week, I had trouble finding two DESR shaving plates and was elated when I finally found where I put them. But I also have a brand new backup DESR that has been missing for years. I know it’s in the house; just not sure where. 🤷♂️
I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.

seriously cool stuff @Teefus -
My Dad doesn't like big pocket knives but I wanted to find him something that was in a button lock besides the utility knife he has. I ended up ordering him CJRB Mica to fidget around with. I wasn't sold on the thumb studs when ordering it.
I came across this CJRB Mini Pyrite that came in titanium, fat carbon handles, and came in a S90V the day after ordering the Mica. I fortunately ordered the Mica through Amazon that will make an easy return. This one came in today.

The s 90v steel makes a great knife blade. An easy touch up once a year though is alot easier than letting it go a few yearsfukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

I ordered my first CJRB a few months ago specifically for the S90V steel. It also has the button lock and mine has a Bowie-style blade. For the $ they’re nice knives.

Grabbed a Spyderco Para2 with CPM CruWear steel and Micarta handles. Been on a Benchmade binge the last decade but wanted to get something with a touch more beef.BM Bailout in pic as well.

Civivi HID. It's almost a folding kitchen knife. It will be good for camping or whenever a smaller kitchen knife isn't available.
I plan on dying the handle and will get a couple pictures when that time comes around. They have a couple nicer looking black stonewashed blade versions of the HID but they drop a couple HRC where this version has tested over 60 HRC. So I'm stuck with an ugly brown until I come up with something else.

Blade has a great belly to it. I get not liking the brown but there’s a place for everything, perhaps it could fit in situationally? Does it have pocket carry or drilled for one? I like it man.WeberWho said:Civivi HID. It's almost a folding kitchen knife. It will be good for camping or whenever a smaller kitchen knife isn't available.

Hey thanks! I've wanted to try dying some G10 handles for some time and this might be the right candidate. Unfortunately with the color I'm starting with I'm pretty limited to what I can change it to. It should be fun to mess around with either way. What it really deserves is some wood scales. I'd love to see a set come out for the HID model but it's still pretty new to the market. Dying them would be only temporary if wood scales do become available.
The clip isn't anything to write home about for looks but it's one of the easiest clips to attach/remove from a pair of jeans that I've found. Functionality over beauty I guess. I tend to wear boot cut jeans that maybe have bigger pockets but the knife felt much smaller than I imagined in my pocket. Still ridiculously oversized to really consider carrying all the time but kind of fun having something that doesn't make a bunch of sense."The pig is an amazing animal. Man from where I sit that looks awesome!Tip up, wire clip, deep pocket carry. Yes sir!
Get that you want to make it “yours” but from here that sucker is hard to beat man, darn good looking!LBGE, 28” BS, Weber Kettle, HCI 7.8 SE Texas -
My last knife vortex event happened a bit over two years ago. No more!!!
Thus the thermo comment...That Javelin pro duo is the best quick read out there for the $$. I recommend to any who are looking to up their Q/grill game-especially hot&fast.
Can't knock Thermopen as they were first to market and their quick read (14 years on for me) is still going strong.

For the few head scratching eggers here (ME) how does one dye plastic? And how well do you feel it will hold up?WeberWho said:TechsasJim said:

Here is a very, very basic and generic video about dying scales on pocket knives.

Since G10 is a plastic the dye doesn't necessarily penetrate much into the plastic but enough where you can change the appearance of it. The longevity will all depend on your prep and how much you abuse your knife. It should hold up for basic use but if it sees a bunch of abuse it might not be the best option. Just smear the handles with some epoxy and roll it around in a pile of sawdust. Cure overnight, sand, and stain/oil to perfection!WeberWho said:

Hey thanks!
The blade is 3.48" and that's bigger than I prefer to use for my EDC. My EDC blade is 2.96" and it's maybe a little less intimidating for others if I need to use it outside the house. I prefer smaller pocket knives but this size pocket knife is the new normal for blade size. This particular knife will probably be my Sunday/Church knife.
