As self employed this hits close to home. Our food is garbage, our healthcare ($15k/ year + $15k deductible before it covers anything + $16k/year in medicine not covered by insurance) healthcare was the biggest hurdle to leaving W2 work. I believe our poor overall health and probably a significant portion of mental health issues is caused by our diet. Viscious circle. I don’t think any big cabal planned this, but people have definitely figure out how to profit from it and have no incentive to change.Buckwoody Egger said:

industrial food is so ubiquitous that it’s as easy to catch as a common cold. so we’re all fat and healthcare dependent. healthcare is largely dependent on full time employment. employment is largely right-to-work so you gotta do whatever it takes to keep it. but income disparity is as big as ever so all we have time to buy is industrial food.

After paying 1200/month for healthcare we didn't use last year. (9k deductible). We are trying being uninsured and paying into christian healthcare ministries. It's 861 per month. I only insure myself, wife, and 3 of the 7 kids. One kid is self employed and gets his own insurance. The adopted kids are covered for life or until 26? I'll look into that as they get older.Ozzie_Isaac said:

well good news everybody, the america we deserve started yesterday! it’s been terrible forever, totally downhill, didn’t you hear? we don’t even have to mention 2016-2020 because that gets a big “doesn’t count” — because of all the same people we can blame for everything else!!
the future that republicans blocked the impeachment to deliver is now!! -
7th and 8th grade at a public junior high in California in the late '70s, I took a computer programming class on brand new Apple II computers one semester and a horticulture class where we built our own plots, planted and raised our own vegetables another semester. Also took a semester of ichthyology studying fisheries, conservation of waterways and the biology of fish in a very hands on way.
No point, just a nice memory.
If only there was a mechanism to change our society's views on healthier living and the like.THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER -
It's a jump to say so much fast food= bigly insurance premiums. Yes, I'm aware that over a third of the US population is obese, or overweight. And, yes, consumption of fast food contributes to that.
But, most folks should be aware that health insurance companies are not operating on thin margins. They invest a lot of lobbying effort, and money, to protect those not thin margins.
You could ban fast food, and not make a dent in anyone's insurance premiums. Ever.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX. -

There may be more to it than that. I too don’t tend to gain much weight travelling to various overseas destinations. But usually, I’m combatting the calorie intake with a lot of walking. The difference I’ve found in the US is that a lot of cities really aren’t that walkable.Mark_B_Good said:

well i heard something really convincing about a healthcare plan in the works from the new guy. there’s been a lot of paperwork lately so it’s probably happening real soon. it’s probably a real smart plan. nothing like the “just cancel it” paperwork this week.
you know who i am talking about, the one who revealed to us 10+ years ago that the affordable care act was wholly identified with a non-white guy who faked his birth certificate on his way to the white house. that approach made it so easy to hate the affordable care act that we forgot all about the evils of gap in coverage losing preexisting condition coverage. that sells high cost cobra coverage to one income families regardless of the economy!! thoughts and prayers that they get hired again while on treatment for a long term condition!
and the republicans that stonewalled the healthcare marketplace in various states helped keep the rates high!!!!
make america do that again! -

The US is one of the few places that has parking lots for most restaurants. We just drive up, waddle across the parking lot to eat a calorie, fat, and sodium laden meal, and waddle back to the car.

You are right, it wasn’t just restaurants, I don’t recall seeing any parking lots? A few street parking spots and some regular drop off areas, but no where to park your car!
In the US, it is many state building codes require parking spaces for commercial buildings. They can be based on occupancy or sq.ft like 1 space per 300sq.ft, then you need ADA compliant spots to.I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.

alaskanassasin said:Lexus vs Range Rover @fishlessman? I am patiently waiting for a brief luxury SUV write-up in the car thread.
pretty hard to hate the automatic lockers for 4wheel drive in the autobiography edition range rover, the 510 hp, and the added luxury in the rover is pretty top notch. the headliner in the rover is even hand stitched leather. i bought the premium option lexus with the kdss suspension over the luxury and air suspension lexus gx. opted for the nulux seating over the leather seats, easier to clean with the muddy dogs and still leather-like soft. the lexus still has plenty of power at 300 hp and the kdss suspension is a huge upgrade over a comparable toyota four-runner or highlander. the lexus has three rows of seating so it will be better for two more dogs
it doesnt roll/tip while cornering like the yotas and the kdss stiffens the suspension on roads and loosens it off road automatically to keep the tires planted. the front bumper scares me more on the lexus and forget going 145 mph
i guess the true test is getting to 178,000 miles with just fluid changes and a brake job with the lexus.

im more afraid of frame rot with the lexus, i couldnt find anything about the lexus frame being different than a yota frame. pretty much every tundra and tacoma gets a frame replaced in about ten years up here from excess road salting. its not like the south with little snow, no salt, and a snow day means the car sits in the garage. a snow day up here is a road trip to a ski mountain.....thats if work closes which it mostly does not or you take a vaca day to head north in a blizzard

a brake job at about 150k miles. new tires(tires had another 30k miles left on them after driving about 70k(dry rotted kumhos). at 175k the air suspension started to go and the timing chain started making noise. replacing the timing chain costs more than a resale, thats the real problem with a RR. resale sucks on these. new timing chain install is about $8000.00 with about 4 days of labor down time. you can replace the air suspension with after market coil-overs fairly cheaply. at 178,000 miles it was a choice to fix or replace. i really liked that rover though

Yup. I am rocking an 08 4Runner that is about to roll 300k this year. It will become one of the kids vehicles. One turns 16 in March.DoubleEgger said:A Lexus is just getting broken in at 178k miles.Large, Medium, MiniMax, 36" Blackstone

Speaking of insurance, my most painful years were when I had to add kids to the policy. Twins one year, that sucked and drove me to shop around more aggressively. Kept it at good companies and policies and that paid off with the inevitable learning bumps and scrapes.THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER

Checking in, think we are sunk. First one of 2025?
I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.
