I have always been fascinated with switchblades...I think it started way back in the early 1950's when our local Ben Franklin store carried some really cheap ones in which the crappy spring would break after 8 or 10 openings and the gruff old store owner said "tuff sh*t, kid!"Legume said:I just dug these out of a drawer. This thread reminded me I have a couple of pocket knives that were my dad's. I haven't cleaned them up yet and the stamps on the base of the blades are a little hard to read. I know he brought the switchblade back from Italy when he was in the air force in the late 50's. Very strong/quick action, not like anything I've seen in US.
I really wonder if powerful long bladed switchblades are even still made - though I'm quite sure the big ones are illegal in every state...but is possession in private as a collector - not carried still illegal? And if so how does a guy even find, much less purchase one legally at that!Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time -
@RRP, the original are still illegal in the states. However as with all things the world is shrinking and finding them abroad is possible. I am not sure if you have tried the “new” style semi automatic that require you to “start” the opening before the spring takes over but they are admittedly very slick. They do not have to be expensive. Kershaw makes several that are reasonable.Columbus, Ohio--A Gasser filled with Matchlight and an Ugly Drum.

I already have a solid black Kershaw which I love...but what I want is one of those LARGE "car spring" powered Italian switchblades which would practically jump out of your hand upon opening!Jstroke said:@RRP, the original are still illegal in the states. @RRP understood, I’ll admit they are classy. Might have to get pretty deep in the sock for one. But I will say a man of your years with one brings a whole new level of the term “street cred”.Columbus, Ohio--A Gasser filled with Matchlight and an Ugly Drum.

Trust me...selling gaskets for 21 years at break even hardly makes an old f*rt like me rich!Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time -
Switchblades and OTFs, regardless of length, opening/closing mechanism is 100% legal in AZ. Only restriction is age. Must be 21 to posses. Which I find hilarious, because you can have a handgun in AZ at any age. Just can't buy/sell it.RRP said:

Switchblades are no more dangerous than any other EDC knife the same size.
State Laws Regarding Auto-Open Knives
Don’t Believe the Myths About Automatic Knives
The following states do NOT prohibit auto-open (also referred to as automatic, switchblade, or switch knife) for non-law enforcement citizens. Check State Knife Laws for specific details on possession, carry, manufacturer or sale, as some restrictions may apply in a specific state. See the list below for blade length restrictions.

I was going to mention that switchblades, and books, are banned in many states but AR-15/large magazine sales to folks under mental care are not.nolaegghead said:Switchblades are no more dangerous than any other EDC knife the same size.
But I decided not to.
PS: I just learned about 5 hours ago that it's illegal here in UT for me to carry my fiddle in a brown paper bag.

D*MN, man, I wish I would have gotten to know you when you and your father lived here in IL! Your personality is SO FAR better and different than that of all the CAT engineers I have known and have been surrounded by in my neighborhood for years!Ozzie_Isaac said:

I just picked up a Bugout with light scratches on the blade for $75. They've caught on to certain brands now. Also picked up 3 Kershaws in good+ shape for $8 each.Legume said:For anyone near Austin, there is a state surplus store near the airport. Lots of old state desks, dining filing cabinets and state vehicles and lots of garbage, but they get all of the knives TSA collects at the airport. They have a bucket of those leatherman micras for $1 each. My wife picked up a benchmade lockblade for $20 that is a little scratched but sharpened up perfectly. It's hit or miss, but worth a stop if you're in the area.State Of Texas Surplus Property Open To The Public

Congrats on the real Bugout at a good price! Not only have pawn shops caught on, but so have counterfeiters. Yours has the correct scales, screw location, and grind on the blade.Legume said:

I didn't know anything about pocket knives and their serious pedigree until the precursor to this thread appeared in January. I saw that thread and then went down the rabbit hole. (Thanks @WeberWho ...
🔪). Shortly after the parent thread got nuked I was in the game. The good news is that every time I give thought to a high end food product like SRF I reach into my pocket and say you can't eat this!! Ever forward!Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. For $75, I would have absolutely been on cloud 9 for that knife. Probably even skipped out of the store like a kid.TechsasJim said:

No joke, check it when it comes in. I have seen a rash of counterfeits from Amazon third party sellers on the knife forums. Some have even said Amazon itself. Retail on that is $180.nolaegghead said:
