    while i like walnut better, google says it fades in the sun which means more upkeep, im against that.  but then again swmbo is going to want to paint it down the road anyways =)

    We have thick mahogany and the sun is pretty brutal on it. Expect to have it refinished every 5-10 years.

    @Ozzie_Isaac I like iron doors, the wife hates them. Plus our house is craftsman style so there aren't many iron doors that would look good.

    A spar coating (flexible for expansion of wood from heat/humidity and with a UV absorber to mitigate UV damage/fading) is SOP for wood doors or any unpainted (opaque painted) trim on a house.  You can go 10 years or more between refinishing, depending on how anal retentive your wife is.

    Is the door under a porch roof? If not, it’s going to suffer no matter what. I’d probably get whatever looked good with the rest of the trim.

    Our front door in Texas faced south with no real cover.  It took a beating and eventually we replaced it with a wood grain fiberglass door that was much easier to maintain.  That door placement sucked.

    Some shade to protect the door would go a long way.

    Maybe some shrubs, trees or a bass boat placed strategically.

    Yes we have a large covered front porch. The door sits back about 15ft. It would never get direct sunlight.

    No comment on the door deal-just ordered a few boxes of Girl Scout cookies as this is the season.

    Samoas.  Thin mints a distant second.  All the others would be the only food left in my house if they found me dead from starvation during an apocalyptic event.
