Just a my first Big Green Egg and I want advice

Judson
Posts: 19
Just bought my first Egg. I bought a large version, a nest, cover, grill gripers, conveggtor, ash rake, green egg lump charcoal, and the green egg fire starters.
I want to know from people what (if any) other items/accessories I should think about purchasing for my Egg.

I had all of those things and the only thing left is the ash rake. Also, I didn't get a nest, I got a table, but I've since upgraded from wood to stainless. Cover - ditched it. Don't need it. Grippers - had those but they kind of fell apart. I just use heavy gloves now (put that on your list). Conveggtor - mine broke after a while and I got an Adjustable Rig combo from Ceramic Grill Store. Huge improvement. BGE charcoal - it's just Royal Oak in an expensive bag. Either buy the cheap stuff, or I mostly use Rockwood. Firestarters - lots of opinions on this, but a torch is super easy. For now, my advice is to spend extra money on meat and learn your egg. You'll realize what else you need/want as you go.NOLA -

Did you get eggmates? Otherwise known as shelves, if not, get them, they make life much easier. While you’re at the Egg store you might as well stock up on Dizzy Pig rubs. All of their rubs are great but I would start off with Dizzy dust, pineapple head and Shakin’ the tree. Good luck oh and Welcome!Belleville, Michigan

You may want to look into other methods of staring the fire.
I use a Looftlighter (good if the Egg is near an outlet)
Others use a torch (i.e mapp, weed burner) -
i just the JJ George torch, they are on amazon or JJgeorgestore.com, highly recommend

Thermapen, MAPP torch, raised grid. Welcome. Where are you located? There’s a couple good fests coming up in the south east.Slumming it in Aiken, SC.

Get a Thermapen and a propane torch. Don’t spend another dime on accessories until you learn to cook on it. You’re loaded for bear already.Michiana, South of the border.

Thermopen and a torch. I like the jjgeorge torch.
Other than that plenty of cold beer and charcoal to learn to cook and experiment with different techniques. -

Take your time and actually see what you need. It's easy to spend other people's money here. A good quality instant read thermometer is a fantastic tool. Even just for your kitchen. Javelin Pro Duo or Thermapen are the most popular here on the forum.

Besides a good instant read thermometer you're set.

Learn to cook with what you have. You have enough to cook just about anything you want. There are lots of add ons that you could spend your money on - some are useful, some are not. A good accessory will make your cooks more convenient or more consistent. You will be in a better position to judge after you gain experience.
A good instant read thermometer is a cooking essential not an accessory (just likes knives). Make sure you have one.Southeast Florida - LBGE
In cooking, often we implement steps for which we have no explanations other than ‘that’s what everybody else does’ or ‘that’s what I have been told.’ Dare to think for yourself. -
Foghorn said:I honestly haven't looked at any other instant read thermometers since I bought my Thermapen 6 years ago. If/when it dies I'll re-evaluate. Obviously, others may have opinions on the topic...
