I find it hilarious that people are mad because it's not what they want it to be. It is what it is. If you don't like it, create some content to make it interesting to you or if you don't want put in the work, go find something you like. Stomping your feet up and down huffing about how you would like this place if it were different is baffling to me. You are here by choice and free to add content at any time.Keepin' It Weird in The ATX FBTX

Not sure what the story is, but the money just goes to me and the RW private jet fund. So once I get the jet, maybe I'll eventually go to JAX to party with him. It's for a good cause though!!!!!!northGAcock said:

I lurked here for years then joined finally but didn’t even post for 3 years after joining because I quite honestly didn’t think I had much in common with people here besides owning and using an egg. I’ve been an active member on several mountain bike forums and a home brew forum so I know how forums are and have learned to not get my panties all wadded over keyboard courage. This forum isn’t any worse than others except maybe the political talk tolerance.
That being said some of the nonstop political jargon from some usual suspects is lame and just makes them look bad IMO. Just ignore it and all is peachy, it’s not harming you unless you engage in it and join the lameness. This is why I am not on Fakebook or Instaham, getting annoyed with friends and family can be a lot worse than jousting words on a forum with a stranger.
Meeting people in real life does tend to throttle some things back, people I have thought were total douches have turned out to be cool when I’ve met them to ride bikes and I’m sure that’d be the case on this forum and most others as well.
Taking a break from the internet in general can be chicken soup for the soul, no need to get wound up over such silliness.

Point taken. However, the hosts of this forum have given us an "Off Topic" section, and some of us even mark our threads with a title like "OT - some of you won't want to read this - OT", you can simply not click on those threads.BigGreenBean said:
The OT banter is not intriguing; it's a pointless, distracting pain in the ass. I joined because this forum was recommended, but it's an infuriating mishmash of useless OT crap on many days. If you want OT, then go to the shaving forum or the What Are You Doing Right Now forum. But quit cluttering this one up with irrelevant b.s. I haven't split yet, but this forum's relevance to my green kamado smoker is far, far less than I would like.
I've been on many special-interest forums that start up "Meet-n-Greets", Get-Togethers, PhilPhests, Butt-Burns and Brisket Camps, where members meet face-to-face, and its only natural to make friends and learn other things/interested/dislikes about that person. If this place discussed ONLY cooks, it would be great for noobs (sure was for me) but after awhile, how many "Spatchcock Chicken" threads can you read? It's just a damn grill.
<< Burn him!!
Just my low-value opinion. I'm actually gonna start a poli-type thread myself, but we ARE going thru probably the most important mid-term election in the country's history, and people are going to want to discuss it."Dumplings are just noodles that have already eaten" - Jon Kung

Fair point, I think the tone of the forum has changed over the years. I usually just ignored the banter and look for constructive posts. -

The most interesting forums (and certainly most fun) are the ones that maintain a 50/50 ratio of on-topic discussions vs general conversations. That's the whole point I think, an online social space to shoot the sh!t with others that share the same hobby. I follow a Coffee forum where off-topic banter isn't allowed, and it creeps me out. It ruins the vibe and hampers the culture.South of Nashville - BGE XL - Alfresco 42" ALXE - Alfresco Versa Burner - Sunbeam Microwave

The Off Topic stuff keeps things interesting on this and other forums. A forum has to have some life, keep it 100% on topic and it turns into a reference library.

My wife went on a girls weekend recently and one of them got hats that had that saying on them for the group. We live in Orange County where there are still some people left who aren’t offended by anything and everything but they were heading up to LA and they decided to keep the hats in the hotel room due to fear of being called out, or worse yet plastered on social media. Probably a good choice with social justice warriors everywhere looking for the next thing to “go viral.”THEBuckeye said:

The political stuff on this forum is extremely tame compared to other forums I have been a part of. I choose not to give anyone the power to affect my feelings on an internet forum. Especially when trigger trolling is the new sport for a lot of people.Eoin said:The Off Topic stuff keeps things interesting on this and other forums. Did @NateSilver hack @The Cen-Tex Smoker 's account? Not the first place I would expect to find thoughtful quantitative analysis contradicting "common knowledge".The Cen-Tex Smoker said:Just for context, as of this writing there are 43 (out of 60 total) on-topic cooking threads on the first 2 pages of the forum. All 43 are by different authors and very few are from "the same few forum members". Out of the 17 off topic, 5-6 of them are "Peace Out" derivatives (including this one). there are a few shaving, a few sports, and the "what are you X now" threads. no big deal.
70% of the posts are on-topic, food related, and all by unique authors. If you add in the long-running "what are you X now" threads it's more like +75%.
Say what you want about the direction of the forum but the math does not support the argument that it's all BS by the same few members and no cooking. If you feel that way, you are likely giving too much weight to things you don't like and allowing that to distort your view of the facts.
I will admit that not all threads/posters are weighted the same and some voices are louder than others. Welcome to life. If those things bother you then the internet is going to be a bumpy ride.
It ain't perfect but it's nowhere near "the sky is falling" situation that some are making it out to be.
To me, there are two reasons to hate a forum:- Not enough on topic or interesting content
- People being rude dicks getting you riled up when all you want to do is hang out with your buddies and talk about food
On the second issue, in a semi-civilized group, it is fair to call people out for being dicks. I am not that receptive to the "Well, if they don't like me being a **** on this public forum, then they can just GTFO." While true, I would rather us all try to get along, even the lefties like me and the pseudo-fascist, MAGA hat wearing, jack boot stompin knuckle draggers also on this forum (particularly the ones with good cooks).
One of my favorite things about this forum (and the attendant face to face meetings it spawns) is the opportunity to get to know people and interact with them in a friendly way when I vehemently disagree with them on a myriad of issue.

It is a free forum, right? So I'm unmoved by guilt about benefitting for free. I don't have much experience, and busier than hell, so can't post that much. But I read, read, read. I doubt seriously the Big Green mothership created this forum to discuss shaving or whatever the hell you're drinking right now, which unless it's pictured next to your last butt blast, is irrelevant. My point: I did not envision this as a general interest forum -- mid-term elections, latest cancer mortality rates, skydiving tips, or music preferences -- but a forum for folks to discuss cooking on a Big Green Egg. Anything else, unless cooking-related, belongs somewhere else. That b.s. utterly devalues this forum.Legume said:
