OT Cold Smokehouse Build

I agree, I am going to "bake" the interior for 24 hours and speed up the off gassing then season it quite well, I know it can emit small amounts for some time, I think barking it out will do a lot.....LRW said:Looks good. My only concern with this build is the use of OSB. It has a lot of glue in it and other chemicals.Visalia, Ca @lkapigian -
If you are worried about formaldehyde and other "chemicals", then you might want to take a look at what is in the smoke in your bbq.
https://www.epa.gov/burnwise/wood-smoke-and-your-health
from that link:
In addition to particle pollution, wood smoke contains several toxic harmful air pollutants including: benzene, formaldhyde, acrolein and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).
I wouldn't worry about it.

@nolaegghead not worried about toxins just flavor

I don't think formaldehyde outgassing is as much of a concern as it once was many years ago. I thought most manufacturers had switched to a lower emission process some years ago.lkapigian said:
@alaskanassasin, not really I am going to put a Weber Jr in there and run the temp up and get it to speed up the Off Gassing, I don't think it will be an issue after that I will be keeping it under 100 and "hoping" that seasoning with cut down on the porosity of the material---I will be keeping the door Open for quite a whilealaskanassasin said:No concerns with formaldehyde in the mdf?
But it is an excellent point
Plus, it's not like you'll have food in there for more than a few hours at a go anyway.

I love that it has wheels to make it portable. Can't wait to see it in use.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX.

Thanks @caliking looking forward to it...looking forward to " attempting" to load it up, about 37 cubic feetVisalia, Ca @lkapigian

The wheels make it suitable as an entrapment/push down a hill/laugh hard and/or go to a funeral device.caliking said:I love that it has wheels to make it portable. Can't wait to see it in use.

It would be tempting to build a seat in there, with the smoke inlet underneath as a nod to the small square foot outdoor seating areas of the pastnolaegghead said:Any external fire with a duct into the smokehouse will lower the temp and the ducting will clean up the smoke...I like the wood oven idea.(now only 16 stone)

That would be cool!CarolinaCrazy said:That is beautiful! Perhaps a crescent moon painted on the door?Visalia, Ca @lkapigian -
That's going to deliver some awesome eats. Be interesting to see how that osb works with seasoning
many years ago I had homemade smokers, wood frame with sheet metal screwed on. Did the job for fish, chicken, and burgers. -
I'm thinking it will be fine, worse comes to worse I have a full sheet metal shop I could insulate and line with stainlessWoodchunk said:That's going to deliver some awesome eats. Be interesting to see how that osb works with seasoning

I like that you have put casters on this also

Finally got it in my backyard, just doing a test smoke, works like a champ

I want one. @ikapigian that is great, and I second the idea of a seat in it. I'd make that look as much as possible like an outhouse.

I don’t know how I missed this thread. Awesome build. That thing is so cool that I’m surprised California hasn’t outlawed them

https://www.sips.org/green-building/formaldehyde-emissions-and-exemptionsThere is so much formaldehyde in wood smoke I wouldn't think it matters.VOCs are volatile organic compounds. Aldehydes found in wood smoke include formaldehyde, acrolein, propionaldehyde, butyraldehyde, acetaldehyde, and furfural. Alkyl benzenes found in wood smoke include toluene.
