    wow. you are getting around today. hope you have unlimited miles on that rental. You are going to have the meat sweats for a week. You can buy a bottle of their sauce to take home. I always grab one when I go. 

    You have officially eaten more bbq this week than I have all year.

  • I've had BBQ everyday for the last week. Sometimes twice a day. Either my own from my Eggs or from WoodPecker's Backyard BBQ.  That's my goto place when I'm too lazy to cook. I sure wish I could have joined you guys in Austin.

    So who can tell me where I'm at?


    Is this Micklethwait? I'm going to Austin on business in December and will only have time for 1 stop outside of my work.  Looking for classic BBQ.   I will be taking Uber from the JW Marriott. 
  • So if I had to rank, and frankly it's pretty easy given the choices(based on brisket alone)

    1. Loro - outclassed everything else I've had since I can remember
    2. Micklethwait - a close second but still second

    There's a big gap here

    6. Stile's

    10. Kreuz market

    Next trip(whenever that might be), Val's breakfast and Franklin's will be must haves.

    Thanks again to everyone that came out Monday and those who participated in the thread.  It made for a great trip and first go round in Austin!

    ah- I thought the trailer was Valentina's. Looks just like it. Mickelthwait is incredible. Glad you made it there! Glad to know you liked it better than stiles. Been a while since I've been to Mickelthwait; I'll have to get back over there soon.

  • That is Micklethwait, it's outside seating but the brisket was awesome.  If your in need of a little higjer class place for dinner with even better brisket then Loro is the place to go.  

    Franklin's if you have the time.

    Thanks, It looks like Franklins and Micklethwaits are very close (less than 2 miles from my hotel) so might try for Franklin's first and if the line is too long..Micklethwaits.  I notice Franklins closes much earlier at 3 as well so that may be a factor

    I thought Valentina's too, but wasn't sure - tables aren't that close to trailer and wasn't sure about the bbq 'plate' since they serve those little styro cups at Valentinas.  Never been to Micklethwait, one of these days. 

    Not the best of days to eat bbq outside with the heat, but I think some of the really old places don't have AC anyway.

    and you have to stand next to a roaring fire on the floor to order your food. Very refreshing on a hot summer day. Looks like we have a Mickelthwait visit in our future.

    I'm in.  Doesn't take much.  Not sure where that is, but I had City Market in Luling in mind - here, step into this little sweaty, smoky room in the back and point to the meat you want.  Loved every minute of it though.  You cannot escape there without being saturated with smoke.  We stopped there on the way back to Austin from a funeral.  At least I left my suit coat and tie in the car.

    I was the last customer today at 3:15ish, they put up a sold out sign 5 minutes later and turned away a guy who was just walking up.  It seeemed to be a, until we are out of food or sick of this heat thing.  It was 100 and they were in the trailers with all the heat from the kitchen thingies.

    Come on down. Valentina’s or Stiles Switch for lunch and Loro for dinner. Im around Tuesday. Ill meet you for one or the other if you like. 

    Loro is an an unconventional choice but you can get franklin brisket with Tyson coles food. It’s an amazing place. Tyson is the owner of one of the best sushi places in America (Uchi) and Uchiko which is amazing as well. He and Aaron teamed up to open this place and it’s really cool. 
    Hey Cen-Tex, have you been to Pool Burger? They do a great job with their marketing... Loro is on my list next time I am in town. Freedmans was my favorite BBQ, but I hear they are closing, or are already closed..

    You are correct. Smittys also has that setup about 3 feet from the line with a little plastic chain to keep the patrons safe while they order.

    Granted I am a true outsider, but I found LaBBQ (around 2 miles from Franklin's) brisket better flavored and textured than Mickelwaite's which was also close-by.  Of course La BBQ at 11 AM and Mickelwaites at around 5PM (different day) and the adult beverages in the interval may have clouded my assessment. 
    Planning another Central Texas brisket road trip next spring.
    Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood.  Life is too short for light/lite beer!  Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint.

    That makes all all the difference in the world. Not your fault though. If they are open, they should bring the good stuff. Im sure they didnt offer a 30% discount because the brisket was 30% less good after being held all day.

    I'm happy to report no defib devices were harmed in the making of this thread.   

    Back at work and thinking of how to step up my brisket game now.  That is going to take some new sourcing of the raw product I believe.

    Back at work and thinking of how to step up my brisket game now.  That is going to take some new sourcing of the raw product I believe.
    For the good stuff, I think all you need to do is walk a few parking lots asking people if they have meat for sale.

    Some people fly to Austin for BBQ, and some people just get Stiles Switch delivered to their office for lunch on Friday.



    Being a stickler with these things, I had the person ordering get the brisket uncut, but then had to dig through boxes last night to find my knives....worth it.



    For the record, brisket was very good, beef ribs looked dried out (didn't try one), pork ribs were awesome (but had not had the membrane removed), turkey was good.  Also, peach cobbler, something CLEARLY not on the food plan was very, very good.

    Oddly, after all the green stuff I've been eating, I was also really into the tomato/cuke salad (plus feta).

    Yep, living in Austin isn't all bad.
