You may be right. I can’t argue because I don’t know for sure. What I do know is Auburn was not healthy for that game and played a pretty bad game. I know they turned the ball over 3 times at least. They won every other aspect of the game except rushing yards i believe. And of course the one that mattered, the final score.
I didnt look at the final stats but watching the game it didn’t look like Auburn won anything and UCF missed several easy scores. The sad part is we’ll never know.

  • You are right that is the sad part. It’s all perspective. Maybe one day they will add a couple more teams to the mix so the Cinderella story can be added to college football as well. I know it’s always nice seeing it happen in college basketball.

One thing is for sure. UCF is better than their #10 ranking.
  • You know KJ was not healthy. Carlton Davis didn’t even play. He is a stud CB. Dinson and peters both hurt. I’m no auburn fan so I don’t really know what other starters were hurt or out completely but the depth chart took a beating in the last few games of their season. Not taking anything away from UCF. I just feel it would be a little different ballgame against a healthy bama or UGA. Hopefully they can replace their coach (and entire staff) next year and get in the mix for a chance to prove me wrong.

  • I have never understood why the people who make the lines for Vegas don’t rank the teams. They know a hell of a lot more than the committee does, or so it seems.

  • Although they sure had it wrong in the auburn UCF game.

Here are the strength of schedule rankings which might influence win-loss ratios.

UCF does well with being where they are.  They can always try moving.

Some of the best recruits may elect to go somewhere else than Alabama, because they want to play their first year rather than warm a bench.  Know what I'm saying?

Anyway, their future is in their own hands.

  • @Lit I think it's a shame UCF doesn't get a chance to play for a NC...it's probably my only gripe about College Football. However, under the current system, at the time of selection, there is no way they deserved a spot in the Top 4. Their SOS was pitiful (relative to teams in the top 10-ish), and prior to Bowl Season, UCF had narrow wins over ranked Memphis & USF.

I hope in the future, UCF can either join a legitimate conference and/or win some games against a P5 opponent during the regular season--so they can prove they deserve to be in the conversation at then end of the year.

Otherwise, right or wrong, UCF will never be taken serious as a contender for a spot in the Top 4...regardless if they're undefeated and regardless if they claim being former National Champions.

@distanceman we beat Memphis by 27 the first time. Georgia lost to Auburn and barely got past Notre Dame. Wish our game against GT would have happened it could have helped us.

I think Bama will take this one, but I'd love to see Georgia win it.

  • @Lit the rabbit trail could go on forever about who beat who, who barely beat who, but beat who who who.

I guess my point being. In my lowly opinion, UCF proved they can play with the best (but aren't necessarily the best) -- and deserved a shot at the NC. However, unless they play and beat these kind of top 5-10 ranked teams, they will never get the benefit of the doubt...unless we go to an 8 team playoff. Then I think they get in.

  • @Lit I also think it would've been sweet if the UCF AD put P5 programs on notice at the end of the Peach Bowl. Instead of declaring themselves NC...I would've loved to see him call out the flaws in the CFP system & challenge any P5 program to schedule some games against them next year(s)...maybe next year.

I think Georgia was more legitimate than Clemson. Clemson beat Auburn, as did UCF.
UCF had 6 wins against teams that actually qualified for bowls, Clemson had 7.
Clemson lost to a team that went 4-8, lost their last 5 games, and had only two conference victories, one of which was a victory over Clemson. Georgia did not have such a poor game during their season.
Going undefeated, is not easy these days, ask every other college football team about that this year, especially the 4 teams that made the playoffs. Playing a worthy schedule, which UCF did, deserves some merit. I am with you @Lit.
UCF deserved a shot, the selection commttee was faced with an impossible task, to select only 4 teams for the playoffs. Take it to 8. Reliance to historical significance as a selection criteria, should not overshadow a season's body of work. It is the only reason I can think of to keep an undefeated team, having the season UCF had, out of the playoffs.
    UCF got screwed.

If I recall it right, wasn't UCF ranked  #10 at the close of the regular season?  If so then even with an 8 team playoff there would have been a good chance they would have been left on the outside looking in.  Regardless of the number in any play-off the first out will always make a case to have been included.
Let's just sit back, relax and enjoy the Monday night game.  I think it is gonna be a vintage smash-mouth football game.  The team with the defense playing the best emerges victorious.  FWIW-

I think either could beat the skins
  • To say UCF “should” have been in is a little loco don’t ya think? I mean in order to make the playoffs shouldn’t you need to have a schedule that ranks at least in the top 50?

  • To those who feel UCF got screwed, who would you have left out in order to put them in?

Forgive me please, which of the 2 teams is from the big 10?  Geography has always challenged me. And what bowl game is UCF in?
Did Kentucky win their bowl game? Probably lost to a big 10 team!

  • In hindsight I believe that is an arguable statement Ron. The biggest problem is the strength of schedule comparison between the 2. And of course the money/politics involved.

We won games against 4 top 25 teams this year and would have beat the Dawgs. Not sure if you watched the Auburn game but we should have beat them by atleast 21.
Memphis was #19 and South FL was #23.  And the other two would be?

Would you hedge this bet or let it ride?

I would bet $50 on pretty much any team to win $1,750.

Any love for the bison on this thread?  It isnt power 5, but going for 6 championships in 7 years is the mark of a good program.  Taking farm boys who get no big college love, putting their hand in the dirt and playing old school, power football with stout defense is the kind of football I enjoy.  No teammate is more important then the rest of the herd.

  • I don't have anything against UCF and also enjoy underdog stories, but since we're talking about projections and probability, does anyone think UCF would be contending for a national title if it played a power-5 schedule? Everyone wants to point to the Auburn game, but I would imagine the Peach Bowl was about the fifth or sixth most important game of the season for the Tigers, compared to being UCF's Super Bowl.

Interesting comment.  This past week on ESPN a Vegas oddsmaker was quoted if UCF were playing EITHER Ala or Ga in the NC game they'd be 30 point underdogs.

UCF had a remarkable season and a good win over a Power 5 team in a New Year's 6 bowl.  Their fans should be proud, but they embarrass themselves with all this National Championship talk.
