    we have backup heating systems, even backup systems for the backup. it only gets real hot for about a week here in the summer but stopped in traffic on a highway in the summer is never good for me

    Having just moved from Metro Atlanta, I agree. However, Atlanta has lots of hills, steep, often shaded, driveways and a serious lack of funding for snow/ice equipment and supplies. They finally upped their game after the most recent ice storm where thousands were stranded in 285 for hours and days. An inch of snow is fine. I quarter inch of ice is not. The lesson learned was to use an abundance of caution especially with kids and school busses.

    I never knew if this was true or just an urban legend, but years ago (the 60s), I heard a story about a minor snowstorm in Chapel Hill NC. They had limited snow removal equipment and someone had the bright idea to open the fire hydrants and hose down the streets. Perfect! Problem solved!

    Until all that water froze! :rofl:

    Does anyone know if this really happened?

    I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

    Only thing I experienced more funny than Southerner's driving on snow was the start of deer season. I was auditing a Magnavox cabinet plant in the foothills of the Smokey mountains and was told the plant would be closed on Friday. I asked why?  Well, Sir, Friday is the start of deer season and we always have so many employees call in sick that we can't run the plant properly...so Mr. X (the plant manager) decided to close for the day!

    tire chains for the school buses are cheap  ;)  i drive on ice all the time thru the winter and stuff happens, but i would not drive in ga with any snow and ice =)

    We can't afford to shut down, but opening weekend around here it's a ghost town.

    I've seen a summer day with good surf on Kauai do the same thing to a number of businesses.  There is usually not much to surf in the summer.

    Wouldn't expect anyone to have it up there......that was my point.  Kinda like Yankees expecting us to have snow removal equipment when we only get snow every couple of years.

    @RRP -  The timber mills that supply the wood for Louisville Slugger baseball bats (located along the NY/PA border) all shutdown for the start of deer season as well.   Different priorities depending on where you are.  
    Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood.  Life is too short for light/lite beer!  Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint.

    Yo, genius, lived there for ten years, the genius people like y'all in Georgia are the ones that need the roads to be open. Every other major city has it. A town that size without street prepping and clearance equipment, is the picture of brilliance. Since most of the commerce is due to the road systems you have there, you would think they would be prepared. But then again, you guys burn highway bridges too.

    Have you ever seen how people drive down here on a good day?  If so then you'd understand why it's a state of emergency on a bad one.
    This is true. When they hear the weather is bad and it will take longer to get anywhere, to see folks think they need to drive faster, so they won't be too late to where ever that are heading.

    Probably didn't happen.  I lieu of evidence, I would be skeptical.
