Noobs First Pizza cook

So I am new to the Big Green Egg having just gotten my first one last week. I have a XL Egg. The first night I assembled the Egg I cooked a couple of steaks on it. They turned out really well. Tonight we did pizza on the Egg. Saw a number of recipes that recommended baking pizzas at 650 degrees. I started with the firebox full of lump charcoal and got it going with a BGE brand fire-starter. Left the lid up and the vents open for about 10 minutes before putting the plate-setter in and closing the lid. I put the plate-setter in with the legs up and put the grid on the plate-setter legs and the pizza stone on the grid. I left the top and bottom vents open while the Egg came up to temperature. I lit the charcoal once the pizza dough was made and set aside to rise. I used an infrared thermometer to monitor the temperature of the pizza stone. 30 minutes after the dome temperature was at 500 degrees the pizza stone was still only 200 degrees. It took about an hour for the Egg and pizza stone to reach 650 degrees. The first pizza was a 9 inch pie. I put some corn meal on the pizza stone, but it burned to char almost immediately. I won't do that again. The pizza was done in about 4 minutes. The bottom was kind of burned, but it was very tasty. In addition to the 9 inch pizza we also baked a 16 inch pizza and a 16 cheese bread. We put parchment paper on an air bake pan and then slid the pizzas off the pan and onto the stone. The parchment paper seemed to help the bottom crust to not burn as badly, but they were still kind of burned. Next time we'll try cooking at 500 degrees and see if that keeps the bottom crusts from burning. If anyone has any tips or advise please let me know! Thanks!

Happened to me my fist time too. If you get something to raise the grid higher in the dome that will help. There are plenty of cheap ways to do this, you do not have to go fancy. Also check the sugar content of the dough, sometimes if the recipe has a bit to much it will burn easier.
Good luck and welcome aboardLarge BGEBBQ Guru DigiQ IIMartensville, Saskatchewan Canada -
Welcome aboard.
For your first few cooks, it's recommended to keep the temp below 350F. Check out this guide for first time owners:

As for pizza, feel free to check out my guide for cooking pizza on the Egg. There are many ways to cook pizza as you'll find out, this method is just what works for me, and more importantly the style of pizza I enjoy most, which is thin crust:

Pizza and pulled pork are my two
favorites on the egg. I put my grate on the fire ring and some sort of spacer to get my plate setter a couple inches above the gasket. ( balls of tinfoil or sockets:). We like thin crispy crust and cook them at 600. Gonkind of light on toppings. If you go heavy cook at lower temp so crust and toppings both cook even. Haven't mastered pizza yet but all the attempts have been good eating!!
