We have vast coal resources so how can using the most abundant fuel source become more expensive than using other fuel sources?  Government regulation.  Your point is using circular logic which means there is no point.  Coal isn't needed because it's getting too expensive.  Coal costs are rising due to massive new government regulation.  In the end as stated earlier, electricity costs rise because the liberal policy making douches.

Abundance isn't the only factor here Einstein.  There are significant costs associated with excavation.  It doesn't hop out of the subsurface on its own. The efficiency of translating a fuel source into electricity matters.

Government regulations have definitely played a role, that's for sure.  But you're just willfully ignorant if you believe that's the whole story.  The surge in natural gas has played a huge role in the downfall of coal.

So, what about the cost of building all of these "new & improved" fuel generating sources like nuke plants, windmills, etc?  I'd wager the cost of building massive new infrastructure far outweighs any "costs associated with excavation".

Who's going to pay for all of that?

Oh, that's right.  WE are.

Except we're not.  The transition away from coal has been almost undetectable in electricity bills: Residential rates have been essentially flat since 2006.
