plate setter size

I just bought a medium egg today. Won"t be delivered until the middle of the week. Two reasons I wanted one: pizza and stir-fry. My gas cooktop is a pitiful performer with a wok, and even on a pizza stone the oven is inadeqate for an authentic neapolitan crust. Now, NakedWhiz says on his website to get the 14" stone, which I will do in spite of the seller's assertion that the 12" is made for the medium. I checked using the floor model Egg, and NakedWhiz seems correct. Now, they wouldn't let me unpack a plate setter to check the size for the medium Egg. Are there more than 2 sizes? Which will fit mine? I don't quite trust the seller for the best info now.

    alb,
I know there is a platesetter for the Large, XL, and Small. I'll go out on a limb and say there is one for the Medium too. The box should say what size it is for I'd think.[p]H

  • Egg not delivered for 5 days? Sales guy won't let you open a platesetter to check the size? With service like the it sounds like you should have gone with an Internet retailer and saved yourself a few bucks. [p]I had a similar experience. I lived a block and a half from my closest dealer (I could have carried my Egg home, albeit in multiple trips!), but I ended up ordering it over the web and driving two hours to Buffalo to pick it up (that was when I was in Toronto last summer). The reason: the sales guy I was talking to knew very little about it - he told me that pretty much all it was good for was for smoking. A second sales guy there wasn't much better. Prices were $100 more than a another dealer I knew that sold it a few hours away.[p]Regarding your question on the placesetter size, each plate setter is designed for a specific sized egg. Because they sit on the fire ring, they have to be the same diameter as the egg you buy.[p]Ottawa_egger

    alb,
BGE recommends the smaller stone for the medium, and the 14" one for the large. People have had problems with using the bigger stone on the medium and frying gaskets, as it directs the heat just at gasket level. I think the Whiz elevates his stone just above the gasket line, which should help with that problem. But that's the rub with using the bigger stone--fried gaskets.

  • Cory,
Yeah, I considered ordering online but became concerned because BGE homesite recommended against it. The only dealer near me is primarily a bottle gas company but they have their showroom filled with grills and smokers of all types. They had one section dedicated to BGE's but the only employee available to help me was a woman who seemed much more comfortable discussing the cookbooks and sauces than the equipment. Regarding delivery, we are getting what's left of the snowstorm that hit the West last week and since they sell propane, they expected to be very busy until mid-week. It's OK, anticipation makes it all the sweeter when it gets here!

alb,
the medium should use the 12" pizza stone. i've seen numerous posts stating "i just cooked my first pizza and fried my gasket!".
my dealer gave me the 12" stone, and your seller is correct. the literature from big green egg states the 12" stone fits the medium and the 14" fits the large. [p]it's true a 14" stone will physically fit in a medium, but you'll be replacing the gasket directly.[p]the plate setter for the medium is part number ps12. the legs will fit directly on the fire ring. look at the above photo of my medium with 12" pizza stone and medium plate setter. also, notice the condition of my original gasket with at least 15 baking sessions of above 400 degrees.[p]disclaimer... i'm a relative newbie to the big green egg. all i know is what i experience and read from others on this
