A bit of humble pie served to the USMT in that loss to Turkiye (nod) last night. I know they had their B squad out there but still… hopefully reminds them just how easy it can be to lose a match in the WC.

Portions of that game, USA looked like my soccer team at the Y..

The offsides are out of control. It’s literally the third thing you learn in soccer. It’s costing us goals.

It’s out of control in 75% of every match. Spain’s superstar got caught offsides 2-3 times last night in the first half.

    1) England not looking like a group winner so far.

    2) Any thoughts about Thierry, Zlatan, and Alexi?

I think England turned it on second half when they had to. I also think Thierry and Zlatan have had enough of Lexi, with another 3+ weeks to go

I don't disagree with either.  But, I do agree with Landon Donovan's assessment that England should not be satisfied with how they played.  That was some of the least/worst passing I've ever seen by top players.  There were multiple times when there were passing options and the player with the ball just chose to dribble or shoot.  I don't expect them to look like 2010 Spain or one of Wenger's Arsenal teams, but it would have been great to see some passes into space instead of individuals trying to take on multiple players.

That was quite a match: Paraguay had a game plan and followed it.  Paraguay keeper really showed up in the PK's.  Reminded me (old here) of Muhammed Ali vs George Foreman and the "rope a dope" fight in Africa.
Edit: Brazil had plenty to deal with in Japan as well.

Another PK finish with Morocco ousting Netherlands.  Great entertainment with many end-to end runs by both sides.

Can’t be mad about the outcome of the three matches yesterday. The fans were definitely entertained.

I sort of think Brazil was offsides on the last goal, but no call and no VAR review that I saw.

The ref in the Morocco game was scared to call anything. It was physical from the first whistle. Seems like a few yellows could have been handed out easily.

I attended the Germany v. Paraguay game yesterday. I was completed blown away that Germany lost, especially losing in PKs - they are usually automatic in that scenario.

$600, 16 rows up. Well worth it to me. My kid is attending the Portugal game tomorrow in Toronto.

Looked like England was going to bow out today, and then HK decided differently.

Crazy finish to that game. Read many people complaining that it wasn't a penalty and shouldn't have been a PK. That was a penalty all day long, regardless of the time left on the clock.

Holy crap, what a game for the US. I did not expect the US to survive 25 minutes being a man down, let alone score an insurance goal.
I felt that was the weakest red card foul I've ever seen, especially considering the ref didn't initially issue a yellow card.

Seems like he was in the act of
kicking before the defender stepped in front of his leg, to me, but I’m a Senegal fan… :/

Hopefully an appeal is in the works today. I completely agree, no yellow shown. VAR gives a red. Come on man

    Excerpts regarding the VAR:
"What does 'clear and obvious' mean, and why is it relevant?

"Clear and obvious" is terminology you will hear spoken about a lot when discussing VAR.

The VAR can only assist the referee in the event of a "clear and obvious error" or a serious missed incident. The original on-field decision cannot be changed unless the video review clearly demonstrates this threshold has been met.c

This bar is deliberately set high: the "referee's call" principle means that if a subjective decision is genuinely debatable, the on-field referee's original call should stand. In practice, it means VAR should not intervene simply because a decision could have gone the other way -- VAR will become involved only when there is little or no doubt that the referee has made an error."

Given the no preceding yellow card, Balogun got hosed.

And an appeal will be 100% fruitless. They can actually upgrade the red and extend it beyond the Round of 16 game. US better find another suitable Forward on the roster to play alongside Pulisic. We’re gonna see how deep this roster can go
