I share your despair, sadness, and fear. Even if our president was a wise and judicious man, surrounded by thoughtful advisers with impeccable integrity and wisdom, this would be a highly dangerous move.

Trump is facing the consequences of his decision in his first term to abandon the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action negotiated with Iran by Obama and backed by France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Russia, and China.

Trump walked away from that treaty because it was Obama’s — and he hates Obama because Obama negotiated safeguards against Iran enriching uranium to weapons grade. Obama also got Obamacare through Congress, addressed climate change and nuclear proliferation, and was rewarded the Nobel Peace Prize. 

Obama was a winner. Trump is a loser. Trump cannot stomach this. 

Trump claimed in June to have disarmed Iran. He claimed again in his State of the Union last Tuesday to have “obliterated” the Iranian nuclear weapons program (an assertion rejected by the International Atomic Energy Agency). 

Since then, Iran has taken steps to dig out the nuclear facilities hit during those strikes and it has resumed work at some sites long known to American spy agencies. 

But those same spy agencies say there’s no evidence that Iran has made active efforts to resume enriching uranium or trying to build a mechanism to detonate a bomb.

Iran’s stockpiles of enriched uranium remain buried after June’s strikes, making it nearly impossible for Iran to build a bomb “within days,” as Trump and his lapdogs claim. 

Trump says he wants “regime change.” But unlike Venezuela, the Islamic Republic has nearly a million men under arms. Any attempt to overthrow that regime will require American troops on the ground, and almost surely inflict mass casualties on Americans and on Iranians. 

Trump also said in his State of the Union that Iran has refused to foreswear any nuclear weapons ambitions. Yet just hours before his address, Iran’s foreign minister reaffirmed on X that his country would "under no circumstances ever develop a nuclear weapon.""

Strap in.  This won't be a quick hit.

I have enjoyed the last year.  It has not been without issue, but ultimately had been a great year. I hate to not have anymore, but we must suffer the consequences of our actions.  We elected Trump, we deserve our fate. Sorry.

my guess is that the writer’s audience isn’t the president. the audience is the general public. if the intended audience is people who already agree with the author then it is what it is. 

if the author intends to persuade or enlighten the reader then it’s better to avoid sound bites that people react to (which opens their mouth and closes their ears).

I don’t believe Reich was trying to persuade anyone with that article.  At this point, some men just can’t be reached.

sure, all likely assessments. the article as a whole was in no way a tip toe. it was direct and had lots of great points and i am glad cap shared it.

my hope and belief is that there is still a statistically significant population of people that will respond with votes and other proactive ways that don’t injure others. that population is continually collecting data.  so that was my point and it was worth sharing here among peers.

what i meant there about not injuring others is forward looking — referring to a peaceful democratic way out of all these political messes as opposed to repeating J6 or civil war.  democratic process has winners and losers obviously but “stay classy san diego.”

The path to this from the quote you excerpted is rather tortuous.  You routinely perplex me buddy, I'm not sure how to state it otherwise.  I'm sure you mean well but exactly what you're trying to say and why is rarely apparent, to me at least.

one last try— remember the “when they go low we go high” from Michelle Obama.  it wasn’t particularly effective or enduring but it’s an example for here maybe.  i think reich’s article had a “go low” sentence in the middle of an otherwise effective recap.

I got that point and it’s perfectly clear, just an odd one to make in the context that you did.  But I understand it’s consistent with your dislike for this thread and your routine calls for collective civility, even if I find all of that misplaced.

The king has done something I never thought was possible.  He has aligned the likes of Nick Fuentes and Tucker Carlson with the democrats and liberals.  I think he overplayed his hand - hopefully we do not all
die because of it.

Also, those who still support him, what do you think about his heartfelt statements about the soldiers he sent to die for him? Do you think their death was worth it? Do you know why we bombed Iran?  Do you know what the goal or end looks like?
