There's an odd place just north of me, in the UT mountains, called Peter Sinks.  I've seen pics of it during the summer, looks like a slight depression with a grass meadow, nice place for a picnic, but at 8,100 ft.  It set a new cold record two nights ago, -54º F (true temp, not windchill); that's colder than I ever experienced in Grand Forks (-28º F).

Locally it's bouncing between 11º and 19º, not bad since living in ND but the locals are freaking out.  So nice to sip hot tea while watching the 6 am news, in my bunny slippers...

This is the finished unit...the challenge is keeping the water from freezing overnight at these temps.

Do you fill the drums with warm water, or is it a Russian cold dunk in the lake/river mind of thing?

The weather here in Texas has been labeled "arctic" many times over. It's laughable, until you realize that nobody knows what to do about snow/ice/freezing temps here.

The barrels are not heated and stay out in the cold.  I throw a bucket of hot tap water in each evening before we head off into the sauna to weaken with the ice.  We are cold plunging in ice filled water...which sounds awful, but followed by a 90-100C sauna, it's actually quite the rush.

You guys can keep the ice plunge, lol. NO THANK YOU! That is torture!

What is heating your Sauna???  Is that an outside sauna or indoor??  Mine is outside, and best I get is 80C (which is hot enough for me).

I'm curious too. We run wood at the sauna at camp, 100C is no problem, but too hot for me for more than 10 minutes. I don't know if your in Ontario too, but if so and you have a wood stove and insurance, do not switch companies. I know lots of people that are switching to save a few bucks, and then after the switch the new insurance company is requesting WETT certifications of the sauna stove or cutting coverage. WETT is next to impossible to get unless you have a really big sauna were you can get the proper clearances, etc. Not to mention its a huge expense.

We find the ice plunge to be integral to the whole sauna experience.  We regularly run temps between 90 and 100C.  We have been as high as 115C before we start cracking the door, as we find that too hot.  I will concede however that 90-100C is too hot without the cold plunge.  We use the sauna almost every night, for about 90mins to 1 hour each session, using the cold plunge 4-5 times during the evening.  In/out, in/out.  Repeat.

The sauna is a home built (DIY, not a kit) unit, not connected to the main house in any way.  Solar panels and power station/battery in an electrical compartment provides the power for the internal and external lights.  The stove is wood burning.  The whole structure is built to be moveable (not that I plan to move it), so it does not affect my home insurance.  I do however have a wood burner inside my main house, so I am keenly aware of WETT and such.

On a side note, regarding the question of getting the sauna to temps exceeding 80C, the biggest mistake people often make when building saunas is installing a stove pipe stack that is too small/short.  The stack is really the engine of the whole system.  Proper sized stacks (read "higher") will generate the heat needed (assuming you don't have an undersized stove).  Smaller stacks often do not generate the necessary draft to do an adequate job.

For my sauna, which is 6x8x8ft roughly, it takes 45-60 mins to go from -20C to 90C.  To go from 90C to 100C all I need to do is stoke the firebox with a few more splits to get flame, and we're cooking!   I went to great lengths to ensure the structure was well insulated, with reflective moisture barrier top to bottom, with no drafts (save for my venting system).  When we add water to the rocks to generate the Loyly, the steam is so thick it's almost unbearable, which is why the cold plunge is so important.  The last pic looks out of focus, but it's more a function of the the steam being so thick!

To be honest, I built the sauna on a whim really.  All in all, I can see why it is part of Finnish culture for 1000's of years now.  We have embraced the culture and have incorporated it into our daily routine.  We feel better, sleep better and enjoy the time away from our devices and other electronics each and EVERY evening.

It's been pretty frosty in South Bend. The closer you are to the Lake the more snow there is. It's winter. We knew this was coming.

It's so much easier when everyone from the roads crews to city gov, to utilities, etc. and the homes and infrastructure are built for it.

I am happy without heavy humidity, the bugs that come with humidity and your climate, and of course hurricanes.
    Love you bro!

I have an electric stove ... didn't have the patience to wait for wood to heat up, and then all the clean up. So, I think with electric, the thermostat temperature is likely limited to around 80C, 85C tops.
