I have tried many brands of lump. I have found nothing, available to me I like better. Some are as good, but nothing in the 48.

    Rockwood.

There is one other lump I have tried that I really liked. It was big block ubame oak log section lump charcoal we found in a grocery store in the city of Beaune, France, in the heart of Burgundy.  It was from Japan called bichotan. The link below will tell you about it.

Just a nickels worth of free advice, skip jealous devil’s offering. Get the real stuff.

    Keep grilling.

    Bichotan is bichin’.

Actually, I haven’t tried binchotan, but is available locally at one speciality shop here. I’ve been so happy with the Basques and Maple Leaf that I haven’t felt compelled to try it.

I remember when we got a pallet shipped to the back dock of a local store.  Store didn’t actually order it, but we needed a shipping dock address for the shipper.  Those were the good’ole Wild West days of lump distribution.  Now RW is all grown up and shipping all over!  Very glad to see it.

For those members of recent vintage-Several years ago Rockwood was sourced and distributed through a web site named Firecraft based in New England as I recall with free shipping above a certain $$ threshold.
The model was unsustainable and they quit distributing Rockwood (among others) lump.
@stlcharcoal came to the rescue.  Set up an online buy and delivery operation within a matter of a few weeks.  All was once again well in the lump charcoal world.
BTW- the firecraft (http://www.firecraft.com) website is DRT (Dead Right There.). FWIW-
So Rockwood came to the rescue many years ago, still going strong and merits your support.
    No affiliation here.
Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win.  Life is too short for light/lite beer!  Seems I'm livin in a transitional period.
  • I always use Rockwood from my local Ace. It’s the first lump I tried and never found a reason to change.

Went back to my local ACE again for some other stuff and saw that they 1 Rockwood bag left on the shelf (I had just bought the other one).  Come to find out that they only keep two bags in stock so I bought that one too.

  • It’s all I’ve used for the past 10 years. Love Rockwood

I’ve tried a few other brands, and Rockwood is the best I’ve ever used.  I just trust it, if that makes sense.

Mildly surprised nobody else has talked about what their first time was like.

My buddy Stuart and I were just reminiscing about doing a Rockwood drop ship to Greensboro Nc -
I think we exchanged a six pack of home brew for truck unloading :):)

tonight I had someone from Kansas City in the restaurant and brought up the fine bbq tradition there. —- fueled by god fearin ‘merican St. Louis hardwood charcoal.
