Lump Tales

Hi there!  It’s been a while.  I haven’t egged much since last year because my back keeps sending me nasty notes, but these are a couple of nice short stories.

Bringing in Lump through Checkpoint Charlie.
Last Friday, Wilma, Pebbles and my MIL drove to Windsor, Ontario.  They went because Pebbles needed some driving hours to get her driver’s license and she hasn’t been to Canada since she was five years old.  My MIL has never been there in her 85 years.

They were only going for lunch and then returning home to Flint.  I asked Wilma to buy a couple bags of Maple Leaf lump as long as they’re there.  It’s great lump only available in the GWN.  Little Steven gifted me five or six bags years ago and I really like it.  (I miss that little guy).  So heading back, they get to the border.  Customs or the Border Patrol was very suspicious.  They kept asking why they traveled all the way from Flint for a couple of bags of lump.  The officials were contemplating sending them to the “Bend Over & Grab Your Ankles” area.  Meanwhile my MIL was incredulous and offended.  “Why don’t you look through my lunch leftovers?”  All I can say is, for the sake of household peace, it’s probably a good thing I wasn’t there.

A Discerning Lump Consumer

We’re working on garage organization this spring.  So we put the lump we had there on the veranda (covered deck).  Some sort of critter decided to tear into my bags of lump.  Two bags were damaged.  I have a few different brands, but the critter only chose the Rockwood.  I put the loose lump into the Kingsford bins.  Don’t judge me for that or the two bags of Kingsford I burn in my chiminea.

Don’t worry.  I still haven’t unpacked my last Rockwood order.

Thanks and I hope you have a great day.
Flint, Michigan

No judgment here for KBB.  Occasionally, when I want the classic American sooty grill flavor, I toss a KBB in my egg!  It just hits different.

Also, bet the critter was upset when he finally got into the bag! 😂

My dad only knows how to use an old school pit with Kingsford. And that’s ok, it brings back  childhood memories.
  • That Maple Leaf is an excellent lump. My garage is full of it, and I have @canugghead to blame.

The upside of the critters having torn into your bags is that you won’t have to fumble with the string. 🙂

I only knew KBB for most my life.  That was what the rich folk used.  Gas was for the masses.

Then I was introduced to the Egg and learned a new meaning to the term “lump”.

I can tell ya about JD vs. Rockwood.  Both start the same, JD is heavier and stinks to high heaven when it’s getting up to temp.  Once it is burned off it still smells, but not as bad.  It will burn long and hot though.

    Rockwood is way better IMNSHO.

I have Rockwood, FOGO, Royal Oak, Wicked Good Weekend Warrior, a partial bag of Ozark Oak and Maple Leaf.  That’s nuts.

Glad you have surfaced and I love the two stories.  Thanks for sharing.
You are privileged to have such great options available.  My source of the WGWW sailed several years ago as with the OO.  As you note, Maple Leaf is not found south of the border but every year I spring for a couple of bags of Basques Sugar Maple that enterprising middlemen get across.
Enjoy your acquisitions and that your family made it across unscathed.
Stay healthy and safe out there.
May you find relief for your back issues.

Nothing smells better than a maple leaf cook on a crisp fall night. Used to buy wg comp blend, Ozark, and maple leaf by the pallet. Weekend warrior was a let down for wg when they could not get the comp blend
Really wish maple leaf was still sold here, commie bastards😆😆😆😆😆

My go-to. I remember when it was $13.99 at Costco. Well North of that now.

yep, that Maple Leaf is great lump. It is always in rotation (i work on two bags at a time and often have a third in reserve). The other in active rotation are one of the three BGE types, although I have tried Jealous Devil and a few others. I recently picked up some eXtra brand and the lumps are huge. I poured out a 12" long 4" diameter log. there is no other word than log. I put it back in the bag, but it's split lengthwise so I think that it's got a buddy in there with it... waiting ...

    ah I loved your story!!!

Here I am still with 7 bags of Ozark Oak as part of my 401K assets! =) I'll probably just die and my executor will give them all to some clown just to get them off his hands and out of the garage!

i drank a 6 pack of molsen bradors watching them disassemble parts of my truck looking for drugs. set up a table and chairs, it took awhile...... =) funny thing, the border in nh closed in an hour, i would have been allowed to cross into the us and report in at the vermont border later on if i just waited to cross 60 minutes later. some kinda flaw in the system........... :o    yes.....ridiculous

@Fred19Flintstone Wow, just to be clear, they got harassed by Canadian authorities when heading back to MI?  ;) Hope that's not the case, if so then no wonder my maginal tax rate is over 43%
Edit: never mind, CBP is US, my apology.

I wasn’t there and Wilma’s a little sketchy on fine details.  All I can be sure of is they wore a uniform.  The conversation is accurate according to my daughter.  I place no stock in what my MIL says.  She was an odd duck goofball when I met her and age has not improved that.

I just think it's odd that it was ok to cross the border after hours, drop off your ill-gotten goods, then report back later to get searched😁 there's plenty off open logging roads that cross back and forth anyways if you don't want the hassle of declaring too many beers
