Need something different tonight

I never start discussions, but it's Friday so what the hey. We have a rare treat tonight. All four of us will be home for Friday dinner, including the teenagers.

I'm in a beef, chicken, chop rut. Love it all but need something different tonight. My skills are perhaps slightly above average for a late 40 something dad with a hectic schedule. So just throw out some ideas if you would...please.

I have access to an awesome local market 3 miles from the house so exotic ideas are welcome.

Was thinking Salmon...maybe, but doesn't excite me.

Thanks in advance.

    Chicken wings?

A cut of beef you've never/rarely cooked - with a sauce you've never done?  Tri-tip (or some other cut) with homemade chimichurri?

Sausage fest - with multiple flavors of gourmet sausage?

Cedar plank halibut with some good lemon white wine sauce?

    Green lightning shrimp?

Hopefully, some others will come along and one of the suggestions will speak to you.

How about lamb? You'll need time for that.  You could get some nice brats which is really easy for a hectic schedule.

What about shellfish. Shrimp and grits are great or go Cajun.

Like that green lightning shrimp.  Haven’t done that in a while

lamb is always different at my house.  Can season multiple ways.  We like a marinade similar to tikka masala(thanks @caliking ) with some Indian inspired sides.

    Pizza night is fun.

Korean?  Can do wings spicy or bulgogi with thins sliced beef.

Unless you know the audience likes salmon I would give that a pass.
How about  kabobs?  Offer many different veggies to mix it up.
If you go that route I always do the meat on it's own skewer(s) and the veggies as well.  That way you don't sacrifice the finish of one for the other.  Then have at it.
I'm a big fan of lamb but you either like it or not-seems no middle ground.

I like the sausage fest idea from Foghorn.  With all the varieties out there you can really expand their palates.

Friday night cooks are hard.  Ribs take too long unless you start early.  All of my Friday night go-tos are the things you mentioned.

I like the Pizza idea.  I would do some Papa Murphy's just because it would be faster for Friday night.

I guess for my clan, if it were a Friday night family gathering this time of year, we would be eating nice steaks, local sweetcorn, and twice baked.  All done on the eggs.

Pork tenderloin tacos with that pineapple jalapeño salsa from the salsa thread. It all cooks pretty quickly. Next time, fish tacos, leftover pulled pork loaded baked potatoes.
  • Roasted oysters for appetizer are fun and quick with a compound butter and cheese.   Make sure the shucker has a good “no grit” process and is careful.  Then lobster tails for dinner.

I'll throw yakitori into the ring. Not particularly laborious, has some wow factor, and should appeal to most.

If you have time for groceries, you should be able to grab some different Asian-style marinades from the store (easy to whip up something basic at home, too). Pick your proteins, marinate for a few hours, grill it all hot n fast. Serve with steamed rice (or fried rice, noodles). The most time consuming part of the process is getting it all on the skewers, but you could put the teens to work :)

Always a hit on this side. The drumsticks and bacon+mushrooms disappear quickly.

Involve everyone - the kabob idea is perfect for this, marinate a few proteins, prep a bunch of veg, give’em skewers and let them build their own.
    Love you bro!

I would say, cedar plank Salmon or Mahi Mahi.

    and/or

    Lamb chops

    and/or

Red bell peppers, stuffed with minced meat (pork, beef) and onions, with melted cheese over top to cap them.

Awesome ideas yall. Thanks so much. I love the kabobs/skewer idea. I'll get some local grass fed/finished beef, local chicken, and maybe some lamb.

Tomorrow night will be sausage fest as we will have a busy day but be home in time for this fun idea. The local market has numerous varieties of sausage made in house.

Really appreciate it, keep em coming. I'll be trying all of these eventually.

If yall are ever in east-central GA (madison) you should check out Farmview Market. We'll worth the detour.

I look forward to hearing how it turned out!

My Friday night cook.  Green onion brats, smoked beans.  Left time for a few drinks.

  • Was going to suggest either shrimp or scallops. Both cook quickly and are delicious/nutritious when prepared right.

Feedback around here is scarce but always very much appreciated.  Way to deliver the goods.
I'm sure Saturday's cook will be every bit as enjoyable.  Have a great weekend!

  • I just came back from a dog walk and my Pakistani neighbor told me about his butcher shop where you can get keg of goat. How’s that for different?

I’m pretty sure @caliking did a farking (nod) delicious-looking goat chop or something of the sort a long time ago. Can’t go wrong with a goat stew either.

Lamb chops are also great with that kind of treatment.

Goat is better for curries (equivalent to stew?). Readily available at Pakistani butchers/grocers, and many Middle Eastern grocers, too. The Pakistani and Indian places usually have younger goat. There's more to say on this, but it depends on what's available in your area.

@caliking might be the GOAT when it comes to cooking food at these gatherings.
